Gamblers edge Brampton 3-1 in league action The Greenbank Gam- blers played a single game last week and in a close contest squeezed by the visiting Brampton Hawks by a3 -1score. With the exception of Gambler pitcher Mark Go- reski who retired 15 Brampton batters via the strikeout route, the Gam- blers never appeared to shift out of second gear and by no means did they ever get their game into overdrive. The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when centre fielder Ray Kur- ham led off the inning with a home run to give Greenbank a 1-0 lead. But Bramptom combined a base hit, a hit batsman and an infield mistake to tie the game at 1-1. But in the sixth inning the Gamblers showed some life when Paul Gore- ski reached base with a walk, Don Beaton lined a pinch hit drive to right field putting runners on first and third and Troy Davey scored Goreski with a perfectly executed squeeze play. Ray Kurhan batted in his second run of <8 held on August 23, 1995. A A ing the Library. The win left the Gam- blers with an 8-1 record and still in a tight battle for the league lead with Scarborough Royals, Oshawa Heat and the Oshawa Juniors. Other fastball news this week saw the Waterloo Twins play the Toronto Gators in Scarborough with Waterloo winning both ends of a double header in the I.S.C. League. The oddity of 'these games was that Waterloo imported two pitchers for the twin bill, with Mike Crawford of Mississauga beating the Gators Darren Zack by a 3-1 count, while the Gamblers Byron Bara- nieski outdueled the Ga- tors Brad Underwood to claim a 2-1 victory for Wa- terloo. It has been a long time since the Gators lost a double header, so con- gratulations Byron! This week Greenbank visits Oshawa Juveniles on Monday night and en- tertain the Bradford Sox with Mike Sedore at Ian- son Park on Thursday at 8 p.m. The long July 1 week- Bnd sees the Gamblers at the 1.S.C. qualifier tourna- ment at Napanee with their first game on Satur- day at 1 p.m. vs. the host Napanee express. Legion Squirts extend their winning streak On June 22, Scugog's Legion Squirt Fastball squad hosted King City and ex- tended their win streak to four in a row with a 6-3 victory. Mike LeFort started from the one po- sition and was victimized by three first inning runs thanks to a combination of walks and sloppy defensive play by his teammates. He settled down though and denied the visitors any more runs as the team rebounded to a 3-3 score af- ter four innings. Mike K'd the last two 'batters he faced and gamely worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the third in- ning. Mike finished up with four Ks, six 6 BBs and three hits. : ' Tim Jones came in in relief for the last two innings and picked up the'W with four Ks, one BB and no hits. i Our defence showed flashes of sharp play as catcher Matt Skerratt threw to Jeff Kane at third for a pick off "out." Also Jeff threw to Matt for a tagout at home when a runner at third tried to score on an infield grounder. Geoff Grieveson played his first rep fastball game for the Legionnaires and got a hit on his first at bat in addition to hitting two deep outfield fly balls. Other Port hits were by Adam Lamb, Mike LeFort, Jeff Kane, Mike Koury and Matt Skerratt. Walks were earned by Cory McQuade, Mike Wiseman, Da- vid Akermanis and Devon Howsam. Mike Wiseman dlertly stole second base and scored on a passed ball. Next home game for Port Perry will be on Thursday, June 29 at 6:30 p.m. against Stouffville on the south dia- mond, Water St. Come on out and cheer themon!! Taylor Ford Mites win one Stouffville came to town on the first day of summer to meet our Taylor Ford 'Mercury Mites. A solid pitching effort and com- - plete game by Shane Jef- frey produced this young team's first win. Jeff Cor- bett and Mike Lycett spelled each other at catcher making big plays for needed outs. The strong arms of Petér Jones and Leo Taillon threw out runners like they had on cement shoes. Darryl Co- pithorn's consistent glove at first wasn't his only con- tribution as he went three for three in the lead-off po- sition. Terry Daly and Jus- tin Koury showed more confidence at the plate and were rewarded with nice hits. Taylor-Ford Mercury were trailing go- ing into the seventh but matched the inning num- ber with the same number of hits and allowed Stouff- ville only one run which sealed Port Perry's win. It was great fun to win but Angels win 3 The intermediate Scugog Angels collect- ed three more wins this past week in lea- gue action. After an 8-0 victory over Whitby on Thursday evening, the team, swept a double- header' against Cobourg' on nie ol evening. The first game was a 5-3 victory for the local crew who then picked up a 7-4 victory in the second match. the Taylor Ford Mercury players are enjoying them- selves no matter what the score book says.
