Junior Merchants improve in all areas of the game This sports report for the "Junior" Merchant Fastball team is sponsored by Taylor Fuels, Mike Tobin Photography, Tri-Son Paving and Port Perry IGA. This past week saw the Port Perry "Junior" Merchants play .600 ball with improvement in all areas of the game in preparation for the Junior Elimina- tions. The Elimination draws were com- v, pleted last week and initial comments about the teams that Port will be play- ing look favorable. We will advise our fans of the schedule as soon asitis avail- able, so that they can attend an excel- lent tournament in Oshawa on the weekend of July 7-9. On Tuesday, the classy senior men's Scarborough Royals visited Port. This game was close until the fourth inning when six runs were scored to win the game over the Port Juniors 8-2. Venning and Card combined with Venning pitching four innings with six hits, and five earned runs. Card pitched three innings, walking one, allowing five hits and 3 earned runs. On the weekend, Durham Fields was the place to be as Port participated in the Junior Tournament. This was the first test as to how they might fare in the Junior Eliminations mentioned above. The first game on Saturday was against the Quinte Juniors. Port went ahead in the first inning by one run, when McBride started with a walk and was in a position to steal home on a passed ball. This proved to be the only run of a tight ball game, until the sixth inning when a Quinte player was called for unsportsmanlike conduct, and the team defaulted due to no more eligible players remaining on the bench. Port was officially awarded the game as a 6-0 win. Until the sixth inning, Card had a no-hitter going, striking out three with no walks. The second game, Port met a persist- ant Aurora Juvenile team who have been doing very well in the league. The game Was tied 2-2 going into the sixth, when Moase hit a single to score Ryan Burkholder with the go-ahead run. This won the game 3-2. Swift pitched seven innings, striking out 11, walkingone, giving up three hits and noearned runs. In the'third game, Port met the tour- nament favorites - the Oshawa Juniors. Oshawa quickly went ahead with a quick run in the first, which Port coun- tered with a run of their own in the third. : In the fourth inning, the teams again traded runs and the 2-2 tie remained going into the seventh. The Port Jun- iors' bats came alive when Cochrane started the inning with a triple, and four runs were scored to end the game as a 6-2 win for the Port Merchants. The win over the Oshawa Juniors has been a long time coming and Port felt very confident with the progress they have made in the last three weeks. This advanced the Port "Juniors" into the "A" division with a perfect record of three and zero for the day. On Sunday morning, Port met the Junior team from North Fred whose pitcher kept the Port players off guard by mixing his pitching. Going into the bottom of the fifth, Port was behind on a 3-0 score and started a rally of its own. Unfortunately, the only run scored was Smart on a RBI single by Empring- ham. In the sixth, Port threatened again but Ryan Burkholder and Card were left stranded on base. The final score was 4-1 for North Fred and the Port "Juniors" were abruptly eliminated from the tournament. Card, Swift, Venning combined for seven innings of pitching, striking out seven, walking one, and allowing eight hits and four earned runs. This game will be treated as an excellent experi- ence for the type of pitching the Poit team will be facing at the Junior Elims. Even though the weekend was some- what of a disappointment, overall strides were made in all aspects of the game which will hopefully be carried into future games and tournaments. Hitters for the week were: Ryan. Burkholder - walk, single, double, RBI; Rich Burkholder - walk, five singles, RBI; Card - walk, single, double, triple; Cochrane - walk, single, triple, RBI; Empringham - single, RBI; Laird - sin- gle; McLennan - three singles, three RBI; McBride - four walks, single; Moase - two walks, two singles, RBI; Smart - single; Vander Slagt - walk, sin- gle, double, triple, RBI. Future games: Tuesday, June 13 - Markham vs Port Juniors, Thursday, June 15 - Port vs Finns - 8:30 p.m. at Durham Fields, Thursday, June 22 - Oshawa Juniors vs Port Juniors. Gamblers inch into top spot Greenbank boys emerge winners over Oshawa The Oshawa Junior Double "Bs" came to Ianson Park in Greenbank last Thursday night for a first place show- down with the Gamblers. Both teams were sporting identical 6- 0 records and Oshawa were ready with their star pitcher Jamie Simpson from Owen Sound for this important match- up in the young fastball season. And Simpson did not disappoint as he held the Greenbank team to only two hits and only six base runners during the game and retired eight Gamblers via the strikeout route. Unfortunately for Oshawa they ran into a red hot Mark Goreski on the Greenbank mound who held the Double "Bs" to three hits and struck out 14 Oshawabatters. The Gamblers broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning when Chris Burkholder singled to right field with two out and a miscue by the second baseman put Gambler runners on first and third. Then Brian Till hit a sharp grounder to the shortstop who had to hurry his throw to first base and drew the first baseman off the bag and Burk- holder scored the games only run. However, in the top of the seventh Oshawa's Scott Herriott led off with a double; then a walk and an infield sin- gle loaded the bases. But Mark Goreski bore down and struck out the final Oshawa batter to preserve the Gambler victory. This was a real pitchers battle and kept the fans on the edge of their seats for the entire game. On Monday night the Gamblers were in Markham and again the Greenbank pitching was superb. Byron Baranieski came within one pitch of a perfect game in an 8-0 Greenbank win. Baranieski had retired 20 Markham batsmen in order and had two strikes on the last batter when a ball hit toward shortstop took an unusual bounce and allowed Markham their only base run- ner. : During the game Baranieski claimed 11 strikeout victims, and led the attack with three solid hits. Steve Durham and Paul Goreski had two hits each with Greg Newell, Brian Till and Mark Goreski rounding out the 10 hit attack for Greenbank. This Thursday night the Gamblers host the Scarborough Royals at Green- bank at 8 p.m. The Royals only loss of the season was a 1-0 setback to the Oshawa Double "B" Jrs. Last Saturday the Gamblers hosted their first annual golf tournament at Sunny Brae Golf Course with a full com- pliment of 90 golfers paticipating. Some rain failed to dampen the en- thusiasm of the participants and every- one reported a great day of golf and en- joyed the dinner later at Prince Albert Hall. : The Gamblers would like to thank Luke's Country Store, B&W Farm Ser- vice, Kubota Canada, Royal Bank, Pat & Mikes Fish & Chips, Goreski Roofing, Truck & Van World, Square Boy Pizza, Bob Edmunds Enterprise, P.P.G. Glass, McBrien Transport, Port Perry Auto Glass, Goreski Resort, and Roof Mart Oshawa for their generosity to- ward the success of the Gambler golf. ay. Also a special thanks to all the partic- ipants who braved the showers to sup- port the ball club. This weekend the Gamblers are at the Baltimore Senior Fastball Tourna- ment where their first two opponents will be the "North Fred" Juniors from Napanee and the Oshawa Double "B" Juniors. The tourney starts for Green- bank on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and will continue to a conclusion on Sunday night.
