"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" SPORTS On May 16, Taylor Ford-Mercury Mites trav- elled to Unionville to start the season. Shane Jeffrey pitched his smoke to catcher Darryl Copithorn for Port Perry. Unionville scored first on some defen- sive miscues but Peter Jones answered with his bat ramming out an inside the park home run. Our nervousness In the infield allowed Unionville to score most of the runs unearned. But Taylor Ford-Mercury Mites con- tinued to reply with nice batting, including Leo Taillon's bases-loaded triple and Terry Daly's grand slam homer. At the end of play, Port Perry earned a tie. The next night, the Tay- lor Ford-Mercury Mites hosted the Oshawa Sham- rocks. The Oshawa boys came well-prepared and took it to us for seven in- nings. A highlight for Port Perry was Shane Jeffrey's perfect bunt to start the third in which he eventu- ally scored. In the seventh, Andrew Hale got aboard and was cashed in by Ash- ley Lucas' double for our other scoring run. On May 24, Richmond Hill came to challenge the Taylor Ford-Mercury Mites. A strong Richmond Hill pitcher sent our first six down in order. Once our opponents had a sizea- ble lead, they graciously Mites earn a tie retired their number one man, letting our boys have some fun too. Chris Isaacs scored also and Justin Koury stole home for Port Perry. Stephen Groves got a solo hit for our squad. It was nice to see sports- manship at this level and our boys really enjoyed playing. Minutes from last years meeting were discussed and approved, followed by an encouraging financial report from Treasurer Rich- ard Farrington. Due to a tight rein on expenditures, successful tournaments, and fundraising PPMHA is in a much better financial situation than last year. After the financial report, a general discussion was held. Some of the sug- gestions for improvement were to: in- crease communications with parents on their responsibilities regarding help with fundraising and gate duties, to get more parents involved to help spread the ever increasing work load and to make sure that we have a manager on each team to help with communica- tions. As registration was up to well over 500, and additional ice time impos- sible to obtain, it is time for our mem- bership to lobby and push for a second ice pad. For the first time ever PPMHA had to turn players away from registration. Only those that reside in and pay taxes in the Township of Scugog were allowed to register (those previously registered from the surrounding grey areas were allowed to continue) but if registration continues to increase we may end up with a lottery system to see who is al- lowed to participate. President Bill Van Camp commented on the ups and downs of the 1994-95 season. On the negative side he noted we are still having some problems with New executive for minor hockey discipline and that more steps will be taken to curb criticism of referees, coaches and players and any other be- havior that does not set a proper exam- ple for our players. As PPMHA is facing anincreasein ice cost and OMHA fees it will be a tough job to try and hold the cost of registration. On the positive side we did have a successful season, with a strong hard working board of directors, most of them returning. We had two OMHA fi- nalists and one OMHA championship team. Our long term sponsors are still very supportive, which isintegral in our financial health and our ability to not let the cost of hockey get out of reach. Over 600 attended our successful Year End Awards ceremony and no changes to the constitution were pre- sented. The following are the results of the elections for the 1995-96 board of direc- tors: President - Bill Van Camp; Past President - Grant Laird; Sec.-Treasurer - Richard Farrington; Vice-President Operations - Ivan Geer; Vice-President Development - Jim Duncan. Directors: Linda Ashton, Steve Churchill, Gary Lance, Randy Wise- man, Ritchie LeFort, Deb Tarbotton, Pete Christie, Doug Harper, Al Goreski, Gord Jones, Allynne Jones, John Mac- Master, Doug Danter. , We require volunteers to help out at the annual Antique and Craft Show on June 10. Anyone wishing to help fulfill this commitment can call Al Goreski at 985-3191. Bantam Stars drop one On Tuesday, May 23 the Stars played host to Mark- ham 3 and were defeated by a score of 16-4. Dana Hooker pitched 9-10 Mite action On May 24, the Sea- grave Parks team visited the Greenbank Amsoil Synthetic team for the first game of the season. This was an exciting game, including many ex- cellent plays and hits by both teams, with Green- bank edging past Sea- grave in their final at bat. Seagrave had super pitching by Robby Black and Steven Currie caught two flies. Congratulations to Michael Durward, who blasted a grand slam in the fifth inning. Greenbank had good de- fence in the field and were tough at bat, with triples by Adam Long and Mindy Thomson and a terrific "home run by Alec Stone. Final score Greenbank 12, Seagrave 11. five innings and had two strikeouts and three walks and Shona Moase pitched one inning and had one strikeout. Kim Lachapelle made an amazing catch in cen- ter field. Hits for this game went to Kristy Dalton, Heather Anderson, Jen Hillier (two), Cara Vander Slagt (two), and Tamara Em- pringham. This game was Port's first game of the season and their coach was pleased with the way they played. Our next game will be Tuesday, May 30 at 8:30 p.m. at the north diamond when we play Stouffville. We have an upcoming tournament on Saturday, June 3 in Peterborough. Good luck girls and have fun.
