"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 30,. 1995 -25 EE ------_.----.-----. Sp ORTS PORT PERRY STAR Junior Merchants win tourney championship The sponsors for this week's Port "Junior" Mer- chants' sports report are Ives Antiques, Van and Truck World, Classic Hot Dogs and XL Gas. This week has been a busy one with regular league games and a two- day tournament. These games have helped to work out some of the win- ter rustiness, with the re- sult that the players are beginning to come togeth- er as a team. Last Thursday, Rich- mond Hill visited Port Perry and squeaked out a 4-3 win over the "Juniors". This was a tight game and barring a two-run home run by the visitors, the game would have taken on a different vemplexion. The Port players finally felt that their offence was starting to show. Jeff Card pitched a strong seven in- nings, striking out eight, walking two, allowing five hits and four earned runs. On the weekend, the Port "Junior" Merchants were one of 18 teams which participated in the Scarborough Royals tour- nament. The first game was against a senior men's To- ronto Indians team whose pitcher struck out 13, and effectively kept the Port players from reaching base. Chad Venning pitched six strong innings, allowing two unearned runs in the second, and two earned runs in the fourth by striking out three, walking two and al- lowing only seven hits. In the seventh inning, the In- dians' bats came alive for several more runs, allow- ing them to advance to the "A" division, and putting the Port "Junior" Mer- chants into the "B" divi- sion. The tournament format was now double knock- out, once the team reached the division it was to par- ticipate in. The first game was against the Toronto Spuds mens team, and all aspects of Port's game came together to force a mercy with a 5-0 lead after the fifth inning. Card' struck out nine, walked one and allowed only four hits. Port's next game was against the Scarborough Diamonds mens team. This turned out to be a very close and exciting 3-2 win for the "Juniors". In the third inning, Duane Empringham drove in Scott McLennan and Dar- rell Vander Slagt to go ahead 2-1. In the fifth, Ryan Burkholder's triple allowed Jeff Card to score for alead of 3-1. Jason Swift's pitching- . was continually supported by strong defensive plays, especially by double plays in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the seventh, the Diamonds scored a run and had a man at first with none out. Fortunate- married with children! in four years. ward line. Molly Morris. Panthers win first Port Perry Panthers clawed their way to the first win of the season. Scugog Soccer Club has started a ladies program for the 1995 season. This win ad- vanced the undefeated Port "Juniors" into the next round. Jason Swift, in his first game of the year, pitched seven innings, struck out 10, walked three and al- lowed four hits and one earned run. The fourth game of the day pitted the Port "Jun- ior" Merchants against our rivals, the Oshawa Juveniles. This team had recently defeated Portin a 3-2 league game. The Port team anticipated a close game, but timely hitting, base stealing and good pitching allowed the "Jun- iors" to mercy Oshawa with a 5-0 score at the end of the fifth. Jeff Card pitched five innings for the win, striking out eight, walking one, and just missed a no-hitter by al- lowing one hit in the bot- tom of the fifth. This advanced the Port Merchants into the cham- pionship game to be played on Sunday against an opponent not yet decid- ed. Unfortunately, the weatherman did not co- operate, and the balance of the tournament was rained out. This gave the Port "Juniors" the champi- onship, being the only un- defeated team in the "B" division. The Peewee Modacks boys fastball team gave their fans a little show of what they are made of as they came from behind in two games this week to post victories in the York Durham League. The first game was in Peterborough last Sunday against the Thunder. Pe- terborough pitching was very strong in the first four innings as Port could not pick up a single hit. Chris Jones, Darryl Dalton and Mike Versage were the only base runners as they reached base on walks. Chris Jones pitched the entire game giving up only three hits and four walks while striking out six batters. In the first inning Peterborough notched two triples off Chris and it looked like it was going to be a rough night on pitchers and out fielders. However Chris settled into his usual steady groove and posted three strike- outs in the second inning and the game settled down from there on. Defensively there were some great plays made to help Chris to the win. In the first inning Sean Jeffrey in centre field made a great stab at a fly ball over his head to just tip his glove and then in the third he made the catch on another that looked like it was gone. Darryl Dal- ton also made a great lunge at a ball out in left to have it pop out of his glove as he landed on the ground. Ryan McBride at shortstop made a diving catch and land- ed on second base to get a forced runner toend the third. In the sixth inning Chris Bart Mon- sma made a sliding catch on his knees in left field to help the cause. Peewee MoJacks come from behind Peterborough's starting pitcher had some control problems in the fifth in- ning as they were sailing along with a 4- 0 lead. The walks continued even with a pitching change and with the help of three timely hits in the last two innings Port came from behind to win 6-4. Dar- ryl Dalton, Mike Versage and Mark Richardson each picked up the singles. Great comeback guys. "The next game of the week was at home against Pickering. Ryan McBride pitched the entire game giving up 10 hits and three walks while striking out eight. Defense was again in top form as there were no errors committed. Jeff Ashton had a good game at first base as he made a couple of diving catches. One catch was made in foul territory and he and Ryan McQuade then teamed up to get the runner in a run down between first and second. Ryan was his usual steady self at short and made a nice scoop while crossing second base and then threw the batter out at firsf, for a nice double play. or Matt Sturgess covered a lot of territo- ry as he made a nice running catch out in left field. Ryan McBride led the boys at the plate with two singles and a dou- ble. Ryan McQuade picked up a single and a double. Sean Jeffrey and Mike Versage each picked up a double while Matt Sturgess and Aaron Lycett notched a single each. - Great comeback win again. Down 2-0 in the third, tied it up in the fifth, big rally in the sixth to win 6-4. Next home game is Tuesday, May 30 at 6:30 p.m. against East Gwillimbu- ry. , Gamblers win a pair in league matches The Greenbank Gamblers rolled up a pair of close victories last week behind the solid pitching of Mark Goreski and Byron Baranieski and some excellent clutch hit- ting. The team travelled to Bradford last Wednesday night and came home with a tight 6-5 win to remain undefeated in this young fastball season. Greenbank got off to a great start in the first inning when Steve Durham led off with a double and scored when Chris Burkholder connected for a home run with two out and a full count on the batter, and the Gamblers had an early 2-0 lead. Mark Goreski pitched tour innings of no-hot ball and in the top of the fifth in- ning Greenbank added three more runs, all coming after Bradford had retired the first two Gambler batters. Dan Balacho- rek started things off with a clean single to center and Steve Durham jumped on the first pitch from Bradford's Rich Jack- son to clear the left field fence for a two run homer. Then Ray Kurhan doubled and scored on Don Beaton's single to right and the score was 5-0 Gamblers. But in the fifth inning Bryon Baranie- skiraninto control problems and two runs scored on John Kemp's bases loaded dou- ble. Bradford scored again in the sixth on a Brent FFallis home run and the score went to 5-3. Greenbank scored again in the seventh on Brian Till's hit when Mark Goreski's hot grounder was misplayed by the Brad- ford infield allowing Till to score from third base. Bradford scored two more in their half of the seventh to bring the score to 6-5 but Baranieski bore down to strike out the last batter ona foul tip caught by catcher Paul Goreski. The next night in Greenbank the Gam- blers met the Port Perry Antrims and while Port Perry scored in the first inning on a walk to Jason Rideout and a Dave Dickson single, the Greenbank pitching duo of Byron Baranieski and Mark Gore- ski settled down to toss a four hitter at the Port club enroute to a4-1 Gambler win. The big gun for Greenbank was Brian Till who batted in all four Gambler runs with a bases loaded triple and a double to bring home Greg Newell. Other Greenbank hits went to Ray Ku- rhan, Greg Newell, Mark Dicks, Bryon Baranieski with the Goreski brothers Mark and Paul each chippingin with hits. Port Perry hitters were Jason Rideout, Dave Dickson, Randy Underwood and John Butler. Next Gambler game is this Thursday night at Ianson Park in Green- bank when Aurora (another new team) meet the Gamblers at 8 p.m. ?
