Yes, it's hard to believe, but it really was twenty years ago in the 1975- 76 season that the hall began presenting professional Canadian artists "1the restored Town Hall. Maureen Forrester, Canada's internationally acclaimed contralto, highlighted the official opening with a Gala Opening Concert on Sunday, February 22, 1976. Town Hall 1873 is proud to once again present Maureen Forrester accompanied by the multi-talented pianist, David Warrack, in a charming new show entitled "Interpretations of a Life" on Saturday, May 11, 1996. This retrospective of Maureen's astonishing career combines artsong, opera, Broadway showtunes, night club and cabaret song-stylings, and some wonderful new special material written by Mr. Warrack. Beginning with her experiences growing up in Montreal through her early successes and finally onto the work stage, Maureen presents a unique, touching, and often humorous portrait of what it is like in and out of the spotlight. Anniversary Summer Concert Series will feature country and folk artist Colleen Peterson Colleen Peterson, one of Canada's finest country and folk artists, is the outstanding entertainer featured at Town Hall 1873, in Port Perry on Friday evening, July 7 at 8 p.m. Colleen's soaring voice, engaging stage presence, and exceptional songwriting talent have secured her a permanent niche in the music scene in Canada and abroad. Colleen's music defies simple classification, as her live performances and five albums move freely through country, folk, blues, jazz, and pop. In August 1991, her single, "No Pain, No Gain," reached number one of the Canadian country music charts. She has been awarded two June awards, including most promising female vocalist and best female newcomer. She began her career touring coffee houses in Canada and the United States with Bruce Cockburn and David Wiffen. She has shared the stage with such greats as Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Jessie Winchester, Tom Waits, and Bonnie Raitt, and sang back- up with the Charlie Daniels Band as well as studio back-up with Waylon Jennings, Roger Miller, and Jane Fricke. As a writer, her songs have been recorded by Anne Murray, Sylvia Tyson, and Ronnie Prophett. Recently she opened for Neil Sedaka at Roy Thompson Hall, and performed O'Canada for a Jays game at the SkyDome. Currently she is touring with Sylvia Tyson, Cindy Church, and Caitline Hanford in the smash hit "Quartette." Then, at the next meet- ing, council decided to allow 55 days to save the old Town Hall and resolved "to offer the town hall and the lot it is situated on for sale to the public with the clause that the highest bidder will not necessari- ly be accepted. The deadline is June 17, 1974. A Save the Town Hall Committee was formed on April 28, 1974. The members were: Dr. Ralph Price and Dr. J.J. Hammett, co-chairman, Jane Litt, secre- tary, Bill Brock, treasurer, Charles Foote, Per Hvidsten, Norman Watson, Mina E. Mina, Catherine Christie and C. Clifford. Murley, and Kevin Turcotte, will be featured on Saturday, June 10. The band has just released anew CD, There and Back, but also very out." The group has performed concerts across Canada and represented Canada at the Venezuela Jazz Festival in Caracas. The group, co-led by drummer Barry Elmes and bassist Al Henderson, was formed in 1979 as a vehicle for the performance and recording of their own compositions. Elmes, 1993 Jazz Report musician of the year, isone of Canada's Henderson says, "We're trying, with four most important jazz drummers. The Jazz Report voted Mike Murley the 1993 Tenor - Saxophonist of the Year and Kevin Turcotte the 1993 Jazz Trumpeter of the Year.
