"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" Car payment dropped in lot By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Nine-year-old Steven Blundan was just goofing around waiting for his parents when he found more mone than he ever imagined existed: $85,000, in the form of a cheque made out by a car dealership to a bank. Steven was with mom Sonia and step dad Tim Clancy back on Saturday, April 8 in the lot at Williamson's in Uxbridge when he made the discovery. Sonia and Tim were there to look at the new automobile Sonia was purchasing, and were disappointed to find the dealership closed; but they took a walk around to check out their new wheels anyway. Steven had wandered off and was kicking around in the huge lot when he looked down and saw a slip of paper lying on the rain-soaked pavement. As boys are apt to do, he bent down to check it out. Something about the paper told him it was important. "I was just wondering what it was," he said at the family's Nestleton home last week. "1 just picked it up and I gave it to my mom." Sonia looked at the paper and was shocked when she saw the figures on the registered cheque: $85,461.37, the pur- chase price of three new auto- mobiles. "I kind of went: Aahh! Do you know what this is?" she said. Tim heard the commotion and couldn't believe what his wife was telling him. "I didn't believe it either at first," he recalled. "I said, 'Here, let me have a look at that.'" As the dealership was closed, they took the cheque home and got on the phone. They finally made contact with someone at Williamson's, and learned that the cheque had probably been dropped by a truck driver after he made delivery of the vehicles. The Williamson's people weren't that alarmed about the cheque, but indicated the folks at the bank, to whom the cheque was made out, were somewhat anx- ious to retrieve it. So Sonia, Tim and Steven made the trip to Uxbridge last Tuesday and returned the cheque. Steven was given a baseball cap for his efforts. He said he'll continue to keep his eyes on the ground, a practice he has already found can pay off. "I've got a whole bunch of pennies in my room," he said. "It goes up to three dollars.
