YThe Pickering Select Tourna- ment was the place to be on Monday, March 13 at 7 p.m. Port Perry met Malvern Select minor novice. Compton Cable's opening goal was a smooth pass from Kyle Mullins to Ashley Lu- cas, who slid it over to Jeff Tom- cheski for a hard wrist shot in * the slot. A prespoken plan came together as Danny Halward worked the puck out of the cor- ner with a centering pass. Ty- the dying moments, Malvern broke the shutout flipping it in over a sprawling Leo Taillon. Leo still received game MVP for his dazzling performance. Game two was the following morning at 9 a.m. against Wes- ton. Compton Cable defence led by Shane "Slugger" Jeffrey, Nel- son "Jackrabbit" Langmaid and Derek "Flipper" Goreski were as strong as ever with the puck. The other rear guard, Taylor "Scoop" Churchill, set up Tyson Savage on a breakaway. Tyson deked the goalie out of his shorts opening the ing. Port with great two-way play. Mat- thew Carron set up Tyson Sav- age who banged it in on his sec- ond attempt after getting his own rebound. Ajax came right back to tie at 1-1. The Ajax netminder mis- judged the puck's position after a save, giving Danny Halward the opportunity to poke it through him for Compton Cable's second marker, unas- sisted. Moments later, in the offen- sive zone, Keenan Geer won the faceoff passing to Michael Ly- cett, who popped it in to make it Jackrabbit at their best. Tyson Savage stole the puck and lit up the red light, unassisted. A three-way passing play from Kyle Mullins to Jeffrey Tomche- ski to Ashley Lucas, who put it in. Kyle Mullins flipped the puck in from Jeff Tomcheski to round out the scoring at four. The Port Perry crew con- trolled the game handing Mark Carnaghan and Leo "Faillon team-earned shutouts. It was Keenan Geer who earned MVP . for this game. There was no doubt when they announced that Tyson Savage had earned Tournament MVP. How sweet itis to finally reach the top step. Saturday night it was par- ents against the young people1in a game where anything goes and everything went. There were appearances from the Three Stooges (only three) and assorted clowns (no kidding). The young ones took the oldies no problem with a score of 8-7. After the game everyone en- joyed pizza, pop and cake. What a great and fun ending to a suc- cessful week. Techstar advances to the final round On March 18 the Techstar Bantams headed to Grimsby ror game three of the best of five series. The Techstars had a 2-0 se- ries lead and were hoping to end it. The Techstars seemed cocky and came out flat, before long they found themselves down two goals. Goalie Paul Shrigley 'was pretty much left to fend for himself. ' The Techstars finally got on the board midway through the first when Troy Campbell set up Dave Kamminga to make it 2- 1 Grimsby. The Techstars then slipped back into a comma and allowed Grimsby four more goals to make it 6-1. Scott Sanderson narrowed the gap to 6-2 on a goal assisted by Dave Gainey and JP Copeland. It was deja vu all over again as Tyson and Danny's one-two punch resulted in our third goal. Compton Cable kept the pressure on. Keenan Geer got a shot on net and the rebound came back to the slot. Here a waiting Derek Goreski's spinaround backhand shot caught the corner for goal number four. Our fifth goal came as a result of a scramble in front of the opposition's net. Jeff Tomcheski shot, Kyle Mullins banged at it and Ashley Lucas tucked itin. All through the game Mal- vern had their chances too. Strong Port Perry goaltending from Mark Carnaghan and Leo . Taillon kept them in check. In Perry roared down the ice again. Keenan Geer banged in a rebound with assists going to Danny Halward and Derek Go- reski. "The little engine that could," Kory Bauer, slammed in a beau- tiful goal with assists to Mi- chael Lycett and Derek Gore- ski. Weston got a goal back, but the final outcome wasn't in doubt as Jeff Tomcheski scored to end it with an assist to Ashley Lucas. Tyson Savage played with fire in his eyes and won the game's MVP. Later that day, at 2 p.m., Ajax was next for game three. This was a close contest with tight checking from both sides. Ash- ley Lucas worked her heart out as usual and was all over the ice (back) John Churchill, asst. coach, Jim 3-1 Port Perry. Ajax came back to tie it up in the last minute. Compton Cable's Danny Hal- ward earned MVP. ] Two wins and a tie was enough for first place after the round robin. We were off to the finals at 3 p.m. Wednesday af- ternoon to meet Whitby who had eliminated Ajax that morn- ing. The scouting report was that the Whitby Wildcats had indi- vidual talent but Port Perry's great team play was ready to meet the challenge. Danny Hal- ward set up Keenan Geer in front to start Compton Cable off with a quick goal. The defensive core was domi- nant in the neutral zone with Slugger, Scoop, Flipper and Atom Bs All-Ontario bound Techstars looked alive. The first period was playe overtime. game 4-3 and the series 3-1. als from Dillian Weber scored six seconds apart made it 6-4. y Campbell and Dan Lyons got the assists. Grimsby got one back to make it 7-4. Dan Lyons added one more to cut the gap sisted. But it was not enough-and the game ended 7-5. The following night they were back at it again. A series of penalties saw the Techstars at a disadvantage but Doug Short came up with some great goaltending of his own. Dave Kamminga put them on the board on a goal assisted by Dave Gainey and Glen McCready. Thirdy seconds later Dave Gainey made it 2-0 from Glen McCready and Dillian Weber. Early in the second Grimsby got seven back. Kamminga struck again putting one in the top corner. Campbell as- The Pineridge Atoms advanced to the All- Ontario finals with a dramatic 3-2 overtime win in Hespler on Saturday evening. Facing elimination in the semi-finals series the Hes- pler Shamrocks responded by playing very dis- ciplined and aggressive hockey. They carried the game to Port Perry early and only some stellar goaltending by Shand Fischer kept things scoreless after one period. The second frame was highlighted by some excellent end to end action and Port was finally rewarded for their hard work when David Halward broke around the defense to score after receiving a nice pass from Dylan Harper. Hespler rose to the challenge and with two mins. left in the second they tied the score at 1- 1. Early in the third period Matt Skerratt, whose been a sniper through the playoffs, scored from Gerrard Timmers to restore our one goal lead. The Hespler team never gave up and with five mins. remaining in the game they scored the goal that would take the game into O.T. Pineridge owned the overtime with Mike Thompson, Garret Brown, Michael Wiseman cleared the puck quickly out of danger and the forward combinations began to click like they had earlierin the series. Trevor Robins and Joey Schembri were effec- tive against the big Hespler forwards and Wes Langmaid, Glen Thompson, and Geoff Simpson used their speed to keep the defense off balance. Finally, bringing a large cheer from very sup- portive Port Perry fans, Gerrard Timmers scored the winner assisted by Derek Bond. Mike Milligan and Matt Skerratt did extra duty at centre to compensate for vacationing Spencer Churchill. Zac Fis was a welcome addi- tion returning from vacation to share our victo- ry. The boys are playing very well together and seem to thrive on a healthy combo of hard work and fun. Congratulations to coach Paul Milligan and the guys whom are now unbeaten in eight straight playoff games.
