Port scored six goals in the first period and seven in the second on their way to a 13- 2 win. The Eaglettes dominated throughout the game, overpow- ering Whitby at every turn. Assists went to Sarah Al- dridge (two), Amanda (two), Jessica Doe (two), Christine, Jackie, Hailey Wilson and Holly Allison. Heather Imrie played very well in net and was sup- ported by strong defensive and offensive plays made by Shan- non Hatfield, Shannon Urqu- hart and Jenna Davison. On Jan. 28, Port hosted Ajax in a game that was up for grabs for almost half of the first peri- od. The Eaglettes seemed to wake up with six minues left in the first period and, after being down 2-1, finished the first lead- ing 4-2. Port continued their strong play through the second period and ended up winning 11-3. Goals for the Eaglettes were scored by Jackie (eight), Holly (two) and Christine. Assists were made by Brooke Simpson (three), Amanda (two), Holly, Shannon H., Jenna, Hailey, Christine and Whitney. Heath- er again played very well in goal, especially during the first eight minutes when Ajax had a lot of shots but were unable to get one past her. This held Port in the game while the team could regroup. Although not shown in the scoring summary, the rest of the team really played well in setting up the . scoring plays and not allowing Ajax near the net. The close checking and enthusiasm shown by Sarah, Jessica, Cei- lidh and Shannon U. was very important to the win. The Eaglettes then travelled to Brooklin on Jan. 29 for a game against the Whitby 2 team. Port opened the scoring early in the first and from then on the lead seesawed back and forth through the period, end- ing in a 5-5 tie. The second peri- od opened with Whitby scoring first and Port only able to tie it up again after almost seven minutes had passed. Whitby then was able to score two quick goals to take the lead with only three minutes left to play. Big V tops Scala Brothers 7-5 Saturday's PHL action fea- tured a match-up with Big V and Scala Bros. Big V got on the board first with Mike Wads- worth's blast after a nice setup from Chris Medford and Billy Carr. Less than two minutes later, Scala scored the equalizer when Eric Troan converted a pass from Ian Garnet. Big V's Billy Carr owned the rest of the first period as he fired in three goals, one assisted by Steven Schewaga and two unassisted, to put Big V up by a score of 4-1. Scala cut the margin to two early in the second when Brent Simpson and Ian Garnet com- bined to set up Eric Troan who rifled a shot past Eric Bird. Chris Medford put Matt McGar- ry into the clear and he made no mistake in tucking a shot past Devon Symes to restore Big V's margin to three goals. The Sca- la squad refused to give up as they scored two quick goals to cut the Big V lead to one. Eric Troan notched his third of the game from Ian Garnet and Jon Ragalski fired a solo marker in the comeback bid. Clayton Dales tipped in a low shot from Mike Wadsworth (assist by Chris Medford) to end the sec- ond period. The Scala team came out fly- ing in the third but Big V iced the game on Mike Giannini's solo effort. Brent Simpson fin- ished off the game with a nice goal set up by Eric Troan and Jordan McKay. The final was 7- 5 for Big V. Great game by both squads. Skate-a-thon Feb. 17 Cartwright Minor Ball will hold its second annual fundrais- ing skate-a-thon on Friday, Feb. 17 from 1-3 p.m. at the Blackstock arena. As this is a PA day for the stu- dents, parents can look forward to a couple hours of relaxation (not to say anything about the peace and quiet around the house). This year's organizer, Patsy Sonne, said there will be door prizes, in addition to prizes for the person who raises the most "money through their sponsor- ships. As well, the skate-a-thon 1s open to everyone in the com- munity, not only CMB ball players. If you have not yet ob- tained a sponsor form, you can get one by contacting Patsy Sonne at 986-9607. Registration for ball will also be conducted during the skate- a-thon, so if you have not yet registered, now would be an op- portune time to do so. This year, as in the past, CMB has decided to hold fund- raising events as opposed to having the ball registrants sell products door to door. The funds raised from these events are earmarked for the future devel- opment fund. As most may be aware, CMB is in need of another ball dia- mond and it is hoped that with the funds raised by this and oth- er events that are to be held dur- ing the year, a new diamond will become closer to a reality. Wayne Mouland at 985-3479 or Carter Lee at 985-1515, Player registration forms may also be filled out at Pineridge Sports Shop in the Canadian Tire Plaza on Hwy. 7A at your convenience. INERIDGE SPORTS SHOP LTD. ii PERRY PLAZA 985-2839 The Canadian Tire Midgets won one and lost one this weekend in their first two games of the quarter final playoffs against Trenton. On Fri- day night the team matched solid checking and fancy maneuvering to come up with a win in overtime. Inthe first period the Islanders scored twice with Devin Blair scoring the first goal with as- sists going to Matt Phillips and Kevin Gray. Port went to a 2-0 lead after Jon Jamieson picked the top corner of the Trenton net after picking up the rebound from Kevin Gray. Tren- ton scored their first goal of the game with two minutes left to go in the period. In the second period Trenton was able to tie the score before Darren Kinnunen got the Is- landers the go ahead goal with a great scoring effort and fine passing play by Carl Phoenix and Matt Brown. But' Trenton kept right on charging and again scored to tie the game. Again Port took the lead when matt Brown was on the mark af- ter picking up a pass from Kent Taylor. Todd Parry of the Islanders gave us what we thought would be the winning goal at the 4:58 mark with a nice set up by Devin Blair, but Trenton was not to be turned away empty handed yet. They tied the game with just over two minutes to go. This took us into overtime and Port was now on the warpath. Brian Bickmore had been between the pipes for the team and he came up strong with a num- ber of good saves throughout the game, but when we went into overtime Brian's work was done. The Islanders made all the shots and it didn't take long before Matt Phillips was able to score our first overtime goal with assists going to Kent Taylor and Todd Parry. Before the 10 minutes were over Darren Kinnunen had scored his second goal of the game with the as- sists by Eric Lucyk and Jon Jamieson. Port met up again with Trenton on Sunday night in their home arena and again this game had to go into overtime to determine a winner. Midgets tied in playoffs 'other game where our boys put up a great effort, Unfortunately, Port was on the wrong side of the scoring at the end of this one. Both teams seemed to be evenly matched and this was an- but in the overtime period they just couldn't hold Trenton off. The final score of the game was 7-6. Trenton took the lead early in the first perio and were ahead 2-0 before Todd Parry of the Is- landers was able to draw the first blood for the team. He made a great move on the defenseman and caught the top corner of the net as the goalie was on his way down. Devin Blair picked up the assist. Matt Phillips tied the game up with a nail- biting shot, after picking up an assist from Todd Parry and Darren Kinnunen. In the second period Trenton went ahead again before Darren Kinnunen did the godd olde "one timer" to catch the goaltender sound asleep and tie the game up. Todd Parry made a nice passing play on thisone. Again Trenton scored, but Matt Phillips showed his fine stick handling ability to put Port on the scoreboard once again. Kent Taylor drew the assist on this one. In the third period Matt Phillips got his hat trick and put Port ahead by one goal with Matt Brown and Kevin Gray doing their share of work to make this one happen. Trenton again scored a goal and at the 11:15 mark Mark Brownson of Port scored our last goal with the assists going to Robert Gracie and Darren Kinnunen. At this point it looked as though the boys thought they had this one in the bag and with some sloppy work by all Trenton was able to put on the pressure. However, it took no goaltender in net and Trenton with eight players on the ice (yes, I said eight players), just a little slip in counting by the roby and at 39 seconds Trenton scored the tying goal. The game went into overtime and although the boys played good solid hockey they couldn't stop Trenton winning this one.
