ON ALL IN STOCK CARPET & VINYL REMNANTS Expires January 28, 1995 Provincial sled club mounts new information campaign Ontario snowmobilers will be getting the message loud and clear in 1995. January marks the launch of a year-long campaign by the Ontario Federation of Snowmo- bile Clubs (OFSC) to increase environmental awareness among its membership. Under the banner "Conserving Onta- rio's Last Frontier," the initia- tive is spearheaded by OFSC Environment Chair Scott Ta- pley of Stayner. "The wilderness environment makes our sport unique and is one of its main attractions for Ontarians," said Mr. Tapley. "And as outdoors enthusiasts, snowmobilers are naturally pre-disposed to be proactive on this issue. We've pioneered the world's premier trail system in our backwoods frontier and have a duty of care to future generations." Judging by their financial support. OFSC members agree. Since 1992, one dollar from the sale of every OFSC trail permit has gone to a dedicated Envi- ronment Fund administered by Mr. Tapley's committee. Local clubs have been awarded almost $40,000 in Environmental As- sistance Grants for trail work. And the committee has been planning their big 1995 push. "After consultation with the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) and other stakeholders, we decided to research the im- pact of snowmobiling on the en- vironment,' said Mr. Tapley. "This data would become the cornerstone of our campaign and shapes our message to snowmobilers." Last year the environmental consulting firm, Gartner Lee was commissioned to under- take the study. In brief, their re- port confirms that snowmobile trail development and use has a predictable range of environ- mental impacts that are: recur- ring and well understood; site or route specific challenges with limited scale or magnitude; and are very responsive to mitiga- tion and other forms of impact management. It goes on to recommend a broad range of actions to avoid "or minimize adverse impacts and enhance positive effects, concluding that a broader scale systems planning and manage- ment approach be adopted that considers the impacts of the en- tire trail network within a par- ticular region. "OFSC clubs can be proud of a remarkable track record of good stewardship over 30 years and 35,000 kilometers of trail build- ing," said OFSC President Don "We have always worked closely with MNR and will continue to do so in imple- menting the report's recom- mendations through our new, state-of-the-art, provincial trail development manual slated for release in early 1995 to our 287 clubs." Meanwhile, the Environment Committee is taking their re- sponsible riding message to the trails by declaring January "OFSC Environment Month." The launch will be marked by the unveiling of a new environ- ment logo and the distribution" of 300,000 interactive place- mats to selected high traffic, trailside pitstops. The hard-hitting OFSC envi- ronment video "Travelling Light" is being sent to all cable and television stations. There are both electronic and print PSAs. And an informative bro- chure will promote environ- mentally friendly snowmobil- ing throughout 1995. "There are five key themes in the "Conserving Ontario's Last Frontier" Campaign," said Mr. Tapley. "Snowmobilers can do their part by remembering them: Stay On The Trail; Leave Tracks Not Trash; Maintain Your Sled; Don't Chase Ani- mals; and L.eave No Trace." The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs is commit- tol to aleadership role in foster- ing the environmentally re- sponsible development and use of Ontario snowmobile trails by working with stakeholders through a sustained program of funding, public education and innovative special projects.
