The following night, Compton Cable met the league-leading Uxbridge team. Port Perry skated well with Uxbridge in the first two periods. Ashley Lu- cas, Keenan Geer, Mike Lycett and Kyle Mullins all rushed the puck with authority. Phantoms take over first After many weeks of waiting patiently in sec- ond place, the Pineridge Phantoms have cho- sen 1995 to vault into sole ownership of first place honors in the SHL! The New Year open- ing Monday also saw a number of surprises as teams put on their "playoff faces" for the "Janu- ary Jockey" to final berths! Comets vs Aces Game 1 had the Compton Comets break out to a first period three goal lead, but that was it as the 95 edition of the Taylor Aces came back with an unbelievable seven unanswered mark- ers to take the contest 7-3! Granted, the Com- ets were missing Tom Barnes who unfortu- nately broke his leg in last Monday's Boxing Day game, but let's face it sports fans, those Aces were full marks for this victory! Ken Little had the big game with a goal and five assists! Todd Wilbur and Mark Pehle- mann both notched a pair, with singles to Wayne Norton and Al Bonner. Rick Campbell had three helpers, with singles credited to Wil- bur, Pehelmann and sponsor Wayne Taylor in thisimportant Ace romp! Mike McQuade had a pair for the Comets with Willy Edwards scoring the single. Ed- wards also had a pair of assists, with Doug Bache and Jeff Johnstone having one a piece. Sharks vs Chargers Game 2 saw the "magic on ice" continue as the Van World Sharks knocked off the Monsma Chargers! The game was a see-saw battle through the first two frames, but then the Sharks went into a third period "frenzy" to add yet another two points to their season total! Phil Cochrane with two and singles by Gary Lance, Steve Connors, and Jay' Adam sealed the Shark victory - Connors with two assists and singles by Wayne Fox, Adam, Lance, Randy Prosser and Terry Bache rounded out the Van World attack. For the Chargers, Dave Thompson and Bill Bridge had the replies. Brad Hurst had a pair of assists with singles to Bridge and Tony Ox- ley. Clippers vs Gamblers If the first two games didn't surprise the fans, then the third game did the trick as the Ritzgerald Clippers played without taking a penalty for a full game and bounced the high- flying Crandell"s Gamblers to the tune of 6-4! The Clippers had Jeff Brownell in net for this victory and a strong effort from all 10 players present, to take a full team of Gambler hope- fuls! Derek Fitzgerald led the way with a goal and three assists. Steve Lee, Glen Hudson, and Carl Fitzgerald all had one and one. Doug Bronson and Bill "Roc" Owen both had singles and Jody Peters added an assist to start the Clippers off on the right foot in 1995! Carl Durham had a strong game for the Gam- blers with a pair of goals and two assists. Rob Evans and Mark Decosta both had goals and a pair of assists, with George Gladish and Glen McCoy adding single helpers to complete the Gambler attack. Phantoms vs Blazers Game 4 had the crowd buzzing as the two first place teams from 1994, squared off for sole pos-* session of first place in the SHL to start 1995! Both teams were equal to the task as the game went end-to-end and Shawn Parker in the Phan- tom cage and Ken Harman at the other end of the rink put on a goaltendingclinic! When the final buzzer sounded after a truly exciting game, it was the Pineridge Phantoms 2 - the Harrison Blazers 1. The Blazers scored first on a goal by John Har- man from Larry Jackson and Darcy Milligan. But it was the Phantoms on goals by Clarence Stephenson and Colin Asselstine who captured the bragging rights as they moved the Blazers out of first place for the first time this season! Fred Moffatt assisted on both goals, with a sin- gle helper to Jim Fowler in this big victory! Devils vs Hawks Apparently all the excitement of the day was too much for the Pizza Delight Devils as they were waiting for some good fortune in Game 5! It was no such luck as the J&D Hawks domi- nated the game and skated to an easy 3-0 victo- ry. Kevin Dearborn in the Devil net made some fine saves to keep the final score respectable as the Devil skaters lacked a "spirited" perfor- mance! ' Ritchie LeFort had a pair of goals with Joe Curran having the Hawk single. Assists saw Curran, Keijo Kinnunen and captain Callery all with one each. Ray Gibson earned the shutout, but really wasn't overworked in this match. Well the predictions given to end the 1994 por- tion of the schedule apparently woke up a few teams to add an interesting twist to the January contests prior to playoffs! Next week, the SHL action is on hold due to the annual ringette tournament, but look for some more SHL thrilling hockey when the teams take to the ice next on Sunday, Jan. 15 at the following times: 6:45 a.m. - J&D Hawks vs Compton Comets; 7:45 a.m. - Crandell's Gamblers vs Taylor Aces: 8:45 a.m. - Harrison Blazers vs Pizza Delight Devils; 9:45 a.m. - Monsma Chargers vs Fitzge- rald Clippers; 10:45 a.m. Pineridge Phantoms vs Van World Sharks.
