"A Famlly Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 6, 1994 - 19 ---- ss ---- PORTS Minor Novice action Tuesday, Nov. 29, Compton Cable Minor Novice journeyed to Uxbridge for a 6:20 p.m. game. Port Perry was in tough against a well-drilled Uxbridge team. Kory Bauer, Taylor Churchill and Shane Jeffrey worked hard checking defen- sively. Our offence was led by Tyson Savage, Derek Goreski and a fine rush by Ashley Lucas who was upended and awarded a penalty shot. Cassidy Weber made a gallant effort but was thwarted by a solid goalie. In spite of all Compton Cable's team-playing, Uxbridge came out ahead. Saturday, Dec. 3, back at home, Compton Cable faced Markham 2 at 7 p.m. Birthday boy Kyle Mullins played very well with teammate Jeff Tom- cheski. Markham scored first but Keenan Geer struck back with a nice pass from Nelson Langmaid. Matthew Roth and Danny Halward played hard both ways but couldn't stop the many lucky bounces of Mark- ham. The next night Compton Cable were visitors in Bradford again for a 6:20 p.m. game. Port Perry started off quickly with an opening shot on goal by Ash- ley Lucas. She led the team with 10 shots this weekend and fulfilled the coach's request of five shots per game from the of- fensive players. Derek Goreski complemented Ashley's offence with great passing and let loose a few good shots of his own. A smooth-skating Michael Ly- cett's offensive presence was felt by all. Awesome defence was sup- plied by Kory Bauer, Todd Lance, Shane Jeffrey, Nelson Langmaid and the two goalies Leo Taillon and Mark Carna- ghan. Brooklin still on top Framer's Gallery came out on top of a 6-0 triumph over Ra- ven's Renovations in the local league on Sunday afternoon. Both these teams have had problems getting on the scoresheet this season and Raven's appeared to be turning it around a short time ago as they've been in tight in several of their last Framer's built up a three goal lead at the halfway point with goals going to Brent Rainey, Eric Kristensen, and Cary Dow- son. Kristensen, Steve Kristensen, Rainey, and Kevin Smith In the second period Scott McLeod notched one from Smith and Peter Kristensen, followed by Eric's second assisted by Warren Strong with Paul Brough getting the last counter from Tyler Renaud. Scott Blyth between the pipes was awarded the Game two was a close battle as the league leading Brooklin Bruins faced the second place B&R Swampers. These two have had close battles all season with Brooklin coming out on top in- The roles remained the same this week as the Bruins again won this time by a 1-0 tally. This goal came 56 seconds into the game and came from the broom of Nick Attwood assisted by brother Ron. Jim Raaphorst picked up the shutout and now leads the league in this department. The final game of the day had third place Blackstock Brew- ers go down at the hands of Trader Sam's who currently sit right behind the Brewers. Trader's scored first late in the open- ing frame with the goal going to Ken St. Amant from Derick Blackstock evened it up with 11 seconds left in the half on a shot by Gord Bryans with Ron Short getting the assist. Midway through the second Trader's again pulled ahead with St. Amant and Craig Leask assisting on Mike O'Meara's goal. Legionnaire tourney action It was still dark outside when the Legionnaires took to the ice on Saturday morning. Their early competition (Richmond Hill) looked a little intimidating but it soon became evident that Port was undersized in height only. There was lots of action in the first period, keeping goalie Mike MacLennan on his toes. At the :23 second mark of the first period, Richmond Hill scored. Port had some good chances early in the second but was unable to put the puck be- tween the posts. Finally, at 5:33, with Richmond Hill short- handed, Nick Pelyk scored from a scramble in front of the net. Ryan McQuade picked up the assist. Greg Bruton came back with another goal for Port at 5:07 from Jeff Ashton. The third period saw Rich- mond Hill come back to tie the . game on a two-man breakaway. Richmond Hill was a man short when Jeff Ashton pocketed a slapshot, assisted by Sean Jef- frey, making the score 3-2 for Port Perry. Then Nick Pelyk and Brad Johnston teamed up on a nice passing play to in- crease Port's score. At 2:40 of the third, Nick Pe- lyk completed the hat trick with his third goal of the game. Brad Johnston made a nice pass to Nick in the slot and he popped it home. Nick was also chosen as the Legionnaire's MVP of the me. A 5-2 final score pumped the boys up for their next game against Malvern. Game Three Legionnaires vs Thornhill Islanders The Port Perry boys applied pressure on Thornhill from the minute they dropped the puck. PORT PERRY STAR Relic ede) Ned Nol Braden Tarbotton walked in from the blue line, wound up, and hit the post. Thornhill scored at the 3:46 mark of the first period from a scramble in front of goalie Bart Monsma. Seventeen seconds later, they doubled their score on a replay of the first one. With Thornhill shorthanded, Nick Pelyk hit the crossbar. Port ended up with three penalties in the second pe- riod. Thornhill scored their third goal on a slapshot from the blue line. The Legionnaires had some great chances in the third period but no goals were scored. The final score was 3-0 for the Islanders. Deryk Campbell was chosen MVP of this game. Port's point tally after this game was still good enough to put theminto the championship game against the home team, Stouffville Clippers.
