16- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 6, 1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" DD HA ---------- -- Sea eT Tr a A A Rt Juveniles dominate After sitting around for over a week with no games and only one practice, the Key-Bar Office Equipment Juveniles went into Sunderland Saturday night, Dec. 3, and completely domi- nated the game with a 10-1 victory. I'm sure we all felt there were better places to be than Sunderland on a Saturday night 80 close to Christmas, but this Juvenile team has a lot of heart and hates to lose. With our own Juvenile tournament less than two weeks away on Dec. 17, this team is getting into high gear just at the right time. After signing three new players, Jody Logan, Darrell Vander Slagt, and Steve Stiles this past week, our sights are on our tournament and the Silverstick Tournament in Mooretown in January. Port missed going to the A finals last year by two points, in this prestige 836 team Juvenile tournament. In Sunderland, Port scored twice in the first period on goals by Darrell Vander Slagt, from Jeff Vernon and Jeremy Norton, and Jeff Norton from Jeremy Norton and Jeff Card. Sunderlands lone goal was scored by Ian McFadden early in the second period, then Port took over with four of their own. Chad Garvock scored the first of his two goals 15 seconds apart, the first assisted by Jeremy Norton and Jeremy Geer, the sec- ond assisted by Darrell Vander Slagt and Jeremy Norton. Dar- rell Vanderligt got his first of three goals unassisted, before Joe Broadworth ended the scoring in the second period on a blast from the point on the power play, assists going to Chad Garvock and JeffCard. To start the third period we stressed doing some important things we've been working on in practice and came away with four more goals. Jeff Card let a blast go from just outside the blue line that handcuffed goalkeeper Derek Curtis, Darrell Vander Slagt assisted on this one. Darrell Vanderligt got the next two goals midway through the period with some hard ag- gressive work, assists on the first goal Mike Labanovich and Jeremy Geer, on the second Jeff Card and Darrell Vander Slagt. The final goal of the game came on a beautiful effort by Jeremy Norton on a wraparound with only six seconds left on the clock, assists going to Jeff Card and Jason Philips. Jeremy Norton, over the past two years as a Midget player, has been called up on numerous occasions to help fill in as an "AP" for this Juvenile club, but on this his first year as a Juve- nile, this was his best effort so far with one goal and four assists. Jeremy won't get you abunch of goals but he's an excellent play- maker. Darrell Vanderligt proved what the coaches have been trying to tell him that when he's aggressive things start happening, rather than sittingback waiting for things to happen. IGA Juniors win championship of St. Catharines tournament Early Saturday morning, and I mean in the dark e-a-r-1-y, the Port Perry IGA Jr. A ringette team rose to meet their league rival, Whitby, for their first game in the St. Catharines tourney. With 12 seconds left in the first, Lisa put one away on a nice pass from Laura. Whitby scored too, two to be exact, to end the first period and the game 2-1 with Port falling short. After a "13 family" hearty breakfast at Denny's, the squad was ready to meet the Stratford team. Bonni Jo started the game with a body language of "look out, I'm coming, get-out- of-my-way" and wham, top right for a point! "Janwonn" fol- lowed the leader singlehandled- ly, and Brooke scored a beauty shot assisted by Janine. Shona - got another quick one on a pass from Laura to Cara. We domi- nated the scoreboard but not the penalty minutes. This Stratford team was "brutal", with two players and the coach being ejected. Diane Vanderligt took a low- er back injury in the second pe- riod and made a trip in the white machine to the hospital. (She's getting around "slow" now, this word is new to Diane's vocabulary!) To finish the game, Shona completed a hat trick, Bonni scored again and Lisa got one. Diane, Dana, Cara and Janine each chalked up an assist. Final score 8-5 for the good guys. After not playing to their po- tential for a few games, Katie thought a "team talk" was in or- der. The coaches don't know what was said but, girls, what- ever it was, do it before every game, will ya? The Niagara Falls game was clean, fast and end-to-end ac- tion. Katie in net was ready, tough and you could see the gold of the championship game in her eyes. She stopped all but one of the wicked shots on her. Bonni Jo and Janna showed their strong physical strength throughout this game and Na- tasha and Brooke demonstrat- ed their quick strategic moves to check the opposition. These four girls have played defence together for years and it shows big time! Jenn and Jill made some timely passes to contrib- ute to an all round exciting game. Starting with our Friday night game against the Oshawa Bruins. This was our second meeting with the Bruins this season. Port was the first on the board with a nice goal by Matt McMaster assisted by Jeff Ashton and Joel Phoenix, at just 13:16 of the first period. The Legionnaires kept the pressure on with some intense action in front of the Oshawa goalie but despite a nice rush by Jeff Ashton and a heavy rebound shot by Chris Skerratt the Oshawa goalie would not let that puck in the net. Oshawa scored their first goal at 3:54 of the first. Port had the man advantage going into the sec- ond period but Oshawa managed to kill off their penalty and pop another one in the net before the second period ended. The third period found us with the man advan- tage again but certainly not for lack of trying the score remained 3-1, but Oshawa rung up another point at 11:47 of the third. A few players on both teams retired early to the showers after an alterca- tion in front of the Oshawa goalie. When things calmed down Oshawa scored again but Port Perry's Joel Phoenix got one past the Oshawa goal- ie assisted by Braden Tarbotton and Matt McMas- ter with five seconds left in the game. Final score Oshawa 6 - Port Perry 2. Friday's game was just a warmup for what was to follow. The Legionnaires travelled to Stouffville for a two day tournament and what a tournament it was. Game 2 our second game on Saturday put the Legionnaires against Malvern. Our boys were pumped for this one after coming from a fabulous win first thing Saturday morning (see other Le- gionnaires article for details of game 1). Braden Tarbotton got things off on the right foot (skate) by putting Port on the board first with a beautiful shot into the net at just 8:44 of the first period, assisted by Derek Campbell and Aaron Chambers. The Legionnaires went into overdrive from then on. This was one heck of a game, the checking was solid, the defence was like a brick wall and Mike McLennan was between the posts reaching both sides. Steve Wygerde increased the lead to two at 6:55 into the first, assisted by Ryan McQuade and Greg Bruton. The refs whistles hardly touched their lips in this penalty free period. Malvern got on the score- board at 4:44 of the second but the Legionnaires kept the mothentum going and at 2:14 Nick Pelyk sailed one past the goalie assisted by Brad John- ston and Greg Bruton. With just two penalties in this period the pace remained furious with the teams changing on the fly with hardley a whistle for the teams to catch their breath. Ryan McQuade opened the third period tucking number four past the Malvern goalie assisted by Jeff Ashton. Matt Caldwell took a check at the blue line and seen double the players on the ice for a mo- ment but Malvern went to the penalty box for that one giving Port the man advantage at 5:10 of the third. Derek Campbell received a nice pass from Chad Lance and let a smoker go from the blue line and Bingo! Final score Port Perry 5 - Malvern 1. Game 4 of the weekend found our Legionnaires in the final championship game against the home team, Stouffville. Our boys were playing some pretty tremendous hockey this weekend, but it was all on the line now. We thought our other games were great hockey but this one took the cake. These two teams were both on the path for the championship. Our forward lines were firing on the Stouffville goalie one after another but he was not letting anything by him. At the end of two periods the score remained 0-0. Nick Pelyk at just 13:30 of the third period put the Legionnaires on the board assisted by Jeff Ashton and Brad Johnston. It was nailbiting time at 4:50 of the third when Stouffville was awarded a penalty shot. After a few brief words from the ref and his fellow teammates our man between the posts Mike McLennan, who by the way, was playing an "outstanding" game, was ready. The rink was silent, the ref gave the Stouffville player the signal and off he went. Mike was ready, he stopped him COLD! Way to go Mike! The game didn't slow down for a minute. Matt Caldwell passed the puck up the ice to Chad Lance and in it went to put the Legionnaires up by two bigones. Stouffville came back at 2:19 and scored, but that would be their only goal this game. Due to the fabulous effort of Mike, Chris, Sean, Matt, Greg, Chad, Steve, Brad, Nick, Chris, Braden, Derek, Ryan, Aaron, Jeff and Ryan and of course Gary Geer, Ed Teno and Ralph McCullough the Legion- naires were the champions this weekend.
