The morning rush hour traffic resulted in 75 acci- dents alone in the region be- tween the hours of 6-11 a.m. Most of the accidents were minor mishaps, including cars sliding into ditches. Only 11 injuries were report- ed as a result of the acci- dents, as well as one hit and run case. Durham Regional Police Sergeant Rick Bates, who is in charge of the Traffic Man- agement Unit, said officers were run off their feet re- sponding to accidents. Police cannot remember a first snowfall in other years causing as many problems on the highways. In the month of October po- lice in the region responded to 800 accidents and in one day responded to almost one quarter of that total, Sgt. Mr. Davie said he's not wor- ried about the resolution being thrown out by the OMB -- the body makes rulings strictly on the basis of good planning prin- ciples -- but is concerned that the appeal will further delay the much-needed improvements at the ball fields. Plans include improvements to diamonds at the fairgrounds site, and installation of lights for night games. "It bothers me in that this could hold this up so the kids have to go without it for another season," he said. Township Administrator Earl Cuddie said a full hearing on the matter probably wouldn't be convened until late spring or the summer time.
