In their first game, the Tech- stars faced off against their league rivals from Oshawa, the Red Wings. The Techstars looked abnormally brutal that morning, and the score showed it. After three long periods, the Red Wings came away with a 5- 0 win. In their second game of the day, they faced another team from their league, the Oshawa Black Hawks. The Techstars looked a little better this game. Apparently, the refs forgot that hockey is a contact sport as they gave the Techstars three penal- ties on three clean hits early in the game. The Black Hawks scored two power-play goals and were up 2-0 early in the first. The Black Hawks added one more before the Techstars final- ly got on the board. The first Techstars goal was scored by Dave Gainey. The score at the end of the first period was 3-1 Black Hawks. In the second period, the Black Hawks added two more goals. With just 18 seconds left in the second, Dave Gainey scored his second goal of the game, with assists to Gavin Baxter and Ryan Puckrin. The only goal of the third was scored by Ian Parliament, from Dan Lyons, but it was too little too late, and the Black Hawks took this one 5-3. The next morning they played Brampton in game three of the tournament. Although they were unable to advance even with a win, they definitely wanted to get back on a winning track. The Techstars struck first at 5:42 when Dillian Weber scored, assisted by Troy Camp- bell. The 1-0 score held till half- way through the second when Brampton tied it up. The Tech- stars got that one back when Gavin Baxter scored, assisted by Ryan Puckrin, to make it 2-1. Brampton tied it up, then took the lead before the second peri- od ended. Early in the third, Scott (Can- non" Harper shot one in from the point to tie it up 2-2. Gavin Baxter and Dave Gainey assist- ed on that one. The Techstars struck again late in the game when Troy Campbell scored, as- sisted by Scott Sanderson and Dillian Weber. They managed to get one more before the end of the game. Gavin Baxter scored to make it 5-3. Dave Gainey and Ryan Puckrin assisted on that one. On Nov. 23, they were back home in Port Perry for a league game against the Oshawa Bruins. The Techstars looked terrible the first two periods. The Bruins went to the dressing room with a 5-3 lead. The Tech- stars goals were scored by Dil- lian Weber, Dave Gainey and Troy Campbell with Glen McCreedy, Scott Sanderson (two), Ryan Puckrin, Gavin Baxter and Dillian Weber as- sisting. A change in the lines seemed to work as the Techstars began to look like they should out there. Dave Kaminga struck early, with assists to Adam "Bullet" Brain and Troy Campbell. The Techstars struck again less than a minute later when Ryan Puckrin scored, assisted by Troy Campbell, to tie the game. The Bruins regained the lead a short time later. The score was 6-5. Scott Sanderson tied it up, with assists to Dillian Weber and Dave Gainey. They took the lead a minute later when Dave Gainey scored his second, as- sisted by Scott Sanderson and Glen McCreedy. Early in the first period John Bacon put Port Perry up 1-0 when he slipped in a rebound on a sharp angle shot by Scott Cunningham. Port Perry continued to keep the pressure on - not allowing the Bruins too many chances. Grant Hooker and John Burnett patrolled the blue line well in front of goalie Chris Thompson. The hard work paid off when Scott Cunningham flipped in a rebound on a shot from pointman David Justynski to give our Peewees a 2-0 lead. Some good penalty killing was displayed by Scott Brownson and Matt MacMaster late in the first. Oshawa, however, came out in the second fired up and pulled into a tie with Port Perry on two quick goals. The tie remained in effect throughout most of the second until Joel Phoenix put the Doors ahead again on a hard wrist shot that beat the Oshawa goalie. Murphy Irvine was credited with the assist. Oshawa would not rofover though and minutes later scored again toend the second in a 3-3 tie. The third period was all Port Perry. Scott Brownson put the Doormen ahead 4-3 on a wraparound. Just a minute later Chris Jones rattled a hard slap shot off the goal post that whistled be- hind the goalic and out the other side. Hard work was displayed by Russ Brown and Troy Hazelton along the boards. Kam Cooper put the "icing on the cake" late in the third period when he stole the puck at Oshawa's blue line while penalty killing and beat the Oshawa goalie to give Port Perry the 5-3 win. Atoms upended by Cobourg 4-2 On Nov. 25, Cobourg came in to town and for the second time in less than a week, showed sol- id team play and opportunistic scoring to steal a 4-2 victory. In the first period, cagecop D'Arcy Stephens made a save on a Cobourg forward left all alone in the slot. Shortly after- wards, Cobourgused a rare pen- alty shot opportunity to grab a 1-0 lead. They then scored on a goalmouth scramble to go up 2- 0 and the Malmonts looked very disorganized to close out the first period. The second period was a dif- ferent matter as the Port team tied the game with some rejuve- nated forechecking and pass- ing. Scott Duncan broke the ice on a wrist shot that squeaked through the goalie's armour, with assists by Trevor Lance and big Justin Moffatt. Also in the second, Adam Moynes gave his fan club (see that sign!) a reason to cheer as he converted on an assist from Mike LeFort (see that sign again, boys!). In the third, Cobourg had a good chance but D'Arcy Ste- phens stonewalled them on a point-blank shot. He couldn't hold the fort forever, though, as Cobourg got the winner when a man was left uncovered in the crease to tip in a centering pass. (One wonders if he was in the crease illegally on that goal..?) Nothing good happened there- after for the deflated "Green Machine" and Cobourg put the icing on the cake with 42 sec- onds left in the game, thanks to some very scrambly defensive zone coverage.
