"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 22,1994 -3 Historical 'treasure' to be moved to local museum Rodman cabin on Island dates to mid-1800's, says curator By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star A local historical treasure has been identified just under a kilometre away from the Scugog Shores Museum. Plans are now in motion to move a log cabin, dating back to the mid-1800's, from a prop- erty on Head Rd. on Scugog Island, to the museum, an effort that could cost as much as $20,000. The one and a half storey cabin was built by Isaac Rodman, one of the area's orig- inal settlers, in the 1840's, according to Daniel Robert, curator at the Scugog Shores Museum. It sits now on the property known as the Pugh farm, a derelict out building. The cabin is believed to have been moved from its original site on the property when the existing farm house was built, probably in the 1890's. It is an example of the kind of perma- nent housing -- settlers built shanties upon arriving on the land and made do until better shelter could be constructed -- that began to pop up on the Island and around Scugog Township when the area was settled. Mr. Robert said what makes the cabin remarkable is "the fact that it is, as far as we know, the only remaining settler's cabin on the Island." The log cabin currently on display at the museum was brought here from Manvers Township, said the curator. The cabin would have to be moved from its present site, probably piece by piece, and reconstructed at the museum property, where a number of historical buildings now stand. Mr. Robert said the interior of the cabin would have to be gut- ted and reconstructed to repre- sent the kind of conditions set- tlers living here in the mid-1800's experienced. That means bare walls and minimal furnishings. The Rodman cabin, although tiny, was likely inhabited by several adults and children, said Mr. Robert. In addition, checks for rot and other structural damage would have to be carried out during reconstruction, and faulty beams or logs replaced. Completion of the work will depend on finding volunteer labor to carry out much of the work, and efforts of Rodman family descendants, who are funding a large part of the pro- ject. Their interest in the cabin came about a few years ago, when a Rodman family reunion was held at the local museum, said Mr. Robert. Family mem- bers visited the cabin site and later, several expressed concern about saving the heritage build- ing. Soon a trust fund was set up, and family members con- ~ tinue to raise money for moving and restoration of the cabin. Museum administration would apply for government grants to cover remaining costs, said the museum curator. Mr. Robert said last week that if all goes well, the Rodman cabin could be part of Scugog Shore's collection of a dozen historical structures. "It mainly depends on funds," he said. "If the family can raise $10,000 by next spring, we could have it in place next summer." of black ice. after the crash.
