"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 15, 1994 - 19 SPORTS With hockey fans fresh from a "token NHL hockey treat," it was time for the SHL to have a first of it's own this weekend! Since the season began back in early September, the Harrison Blazers have enjoyed "top spot." Al though they have yet to suffer a defeat, tie games in the last few weeks coupled with victories by a hot Pine- ridge Phantom team has the Blazers now shar- ing first place honors! . Since the Blazers and the Phantoms are not scheduled to face each other until Jan. 2, the next few weeks should prove to be interesting for both teams! Comets vs Blazers Game one saw the Compton Comets come from behind in the third period to tie the Harri- son Blazers 3-3. The Comets had goals from Willy Edwards, Brian Burns and believe it or not, another ca- reer milestone from Doug Bache! Dave Dick- son picked up a pair of assists with a single to Edwards to put the Comets in the points col- umn! For the Blazers John Harman continued to add to his points total as he notched a goal and two assists. Dave Milton and Richard Sakana- shi also had tallies with Darcy Milligan grab- bing an assist, and Jim Beatty having no less than two helpers on this outing! Devils vs Gamblers Game two had the Pizza Delight Devils, al- most fully recovered from last week's bombing, play to a 1-1 tie with the Crandell's Gamblers. John Mackey got the Devils on the board mid- way into the second period on a goal from Bill Foote. Then Robert Evans responded on an un- assisted effort for the Gamblers. With no scoring in either the first or third pe- riods and a penalty free game for both teams, this match proved to be a "tidy affair" with both squads picking up single points. hantoms vs Sharks Game three saw the action heat up as the Pineridge Phantoms seized their opportunity to share first place with a 6-2 victory over the Van World Sharks. The Phantoms took charge in the first frame and then settled back while the Sharks made things close. However, three unanswered goals in the fi- nal period sealed the two points and a Phan- tom share of first place overall! Brian Samis, Steve Fox, Fred Moffatt, Bill VanCamp, Ray Zaparanuik and Clarence Ste- phenson all had singles for the Phantoms. Sean Fewer along with Samis and Moffatt each had two assists with a single to VanCamp. Phantoms catch Blazers For the Sharks, Mark Jobb had an unassisted counter, while Phil Cochrane from Randy Pros- ser marked the end of a mini comeback. Clippers vs Hawks Game four really got the building rocking as the Fitzgerald Clippers doubled the J&D Hawks 4-2. The Hawks have been on a roll in the last few weeks, but the Clippers took no notice in the "battle of the week!" Both teams found lots of visits to the penalty box in order during a "spirited" third period. The Hawk attack had Ritchie LeFort scoring both goals with single assists going to Rick Hope and Joe Curran. For the Clippers, Doug Bronson led the way with a pair of goals and an assist. Steve Lee and Sponsor, Carl Fitzgerald, also found the net. Kelly Lee chipped in a pair of assists with sin- gles going to Al Sibbald, Tom Patton and Larry Pilkey. Chargers vs Aces Game five saw the Monsma Chargers keep pace with the leaders as they continued their winning ways with a 7-2 victory over the Taylor Aces. Although the Aces have had a rough two months of hockey action, as the weather gets colder no doubt these Fuel Boys will "turn up the gas" to put more points up on the board! For the Chargers it was another scoring pa- rade similar to last week as eight players hit the scoresheet! Lee Wilbur and Bill Bridge both had a pair of goals with singles to Dave Thompson and Tony Oxley. Assists saw Jim Duncan, Du- ane Bronson, Jack Monsma and Oxley each with a pair, and John Robertson with a single to com- plete the scoring and keep the Chargers just two points back of first place! The Aces saw Ken Little score from Mike Kane and John Kotarba, and later Kotarba from Little and Dave Brownson. After a great week of weather and exciting games of SHL hockey for mid-November 1994, who knows what will happen in the weeks to come? Winter is surely on its way, but which team will emerge as the surprise, as Christmas approaches? Catch all the action next Sunday at the following times: 6:45 a.m. J&D Hawks vs Pizza Delight Devils 7:45 a.m. Pineridge Phantoms vs Compton Comets 8:45 a.m. Monsma Chargers vs Van World Sharks 9:45 a.m. Harrison Blazers vs Taylor Aces 10:45 a.m. Crandell's Gamblers vs Fitzge- rald's Clippers. Pineridge Atoms From Page 16 Wiseman split the defence and found the top corner with a hard wrist shot, assist going to Joe Schembri. In the second period, Matt Skerratt tipped in a nice goal, assisted by Garrett Brown and Geoff Simpson. In the third pe- riod, David Halward and Mike Thompson assisted a goal by T. J. Robins. Spencer Churchill scored the next two goals helped out by Michael Wiseman, Dylan Harper and Geoff Simpson. Fi- nal score 6-0. Zak Fis and Shane Fischer shared the shutout with great goaltending. Game three had Pineridge Sports playing in the "B" final against Whitby. The game was much closer than the final score of 6-2 indicated. After many close calls and bad bounces, it was not until the third period that we got on the scoreboard. Spencer Churchill got both goals with assists going to Matt Skerratt, David Halward and Geoff Simpson. MVP for our team in this game went to Spen- cer. Pineridge represented Port The Legionnaires came up against anothér tough team on Sunday afternoon. The Ux- bridge Bruins were ready and waiting for this game. It was a tough game for our boys all around. We are not try- ing to make any excuses, but the refs showed just a little (ha, ha) favouritism for the home team in this game, dishing out 14 minutes in penalties to the Legionnaires and just six min- utes to the Bruins. The first period was a fast one with both teams flying from one end to the other. Despite the ef- Perry well in their first tourna- ment of the season with all of the boys working hard and play- ing exciting hockey. On Sunday, Nov. 13 in Port,. Pineridge took on the Oshawa Bruins. Defenceman Dylan Harper opened the scoring with a strong shot just under the crossbar. T. J. Robins and Glenn Thompson were awarded the assists. Spencer Churchill went the length of the ice to score unassisted to make it 2-0. Oshawa then scored three un- answered goals to take the lead 3-2 at the end of the second peri- od. Continued pressure by T. J. Robins and Glenn Thompson assisted in the tying goal by Mi- chael Milligan. Glenn Thompson's third as- sist of the night and defence- man Mike Thompson's assist set up T. J. Robins for the game winning goal. In the final mo- ments of the game, while on a power play, Oshawa pulled their goalie resulting in a two- man advantage. But our goalie Zak Fis could not be beaten with the final score 4-3 in a hard- fought win. Legionnaires lose match forts of both our goalies and the entire team, Port would not get on the scoreboard today. Bodies were flying every- where but the Bruins would not let the pressure off for a minute. The Bruins scored two in the first period and followed up with three more goals both in the second and the third peri- ods. Final score 8-0 Bruins. Our Legionnaires are off to St. Thomas this weekend for a two-day tournament. Good luck, boys, you are due!! Our next home game is Fri- day, Dec. 2 against Oshawa. Panther update Overhead Door Peewees win 2-1 On Saturday, Nov. 12, the Overhead Doors Peewee B team hosted the ever aggressive Ux- bridge squad. The game proved to be a penalty-marred event and despite playing shorthand- ed for a lot of the game, the Port Perry team managed to come out with a 2-1 victory. The first two periods of the game had both teams getting some good chances but the game remained scoreless through two. Early in the first, with Port on a power play, good hustle was displayed by the line of Joel Van Camp, Joel Phoenix and Russ Brown. On the same power play, the Uxbridge goalie stopped a hard screened wrist shot from Chris Jones on the point. Ryan Fraser, who got the win in net, was called upon to make some good saves of his own. In the second period, our Bs had to play shorthanded five- on-three and Scott Cunning- ham, David Justynski, Reid McTaggart and Chris Jones helped kill offthe penalty well. In the third period, the scor- ers on both teams finally man- aged to break the ice. Right at the top of the third, Uxbridge went up 1-0 on a power play. But the Port boys didn't let down and just a minute later, Kam Cooper and Troy Hazelton went in on a two-on-none and Kam shot at the goalie. Scott Brownson, trailing the play, flipped in the rebound. Port Perry pushed the score to 2-1 two minutes later, when Matt MacMaster came out of the cor- ner with the puck and the re- bound from his shot was flipped over the goalie by John Bacon. An assist also went to John Bur- nett. The Doors continued to work hard to preserve their lead and managed to kill off a five- minute major late in the third to take the win. The coach's choice for best effort went to Scott Cunningham. On Sunday, Nov. 13, the Oshawa Bruins came to town to take on our Peewee Bs. The Overhead Doors boys were equa. othe task and skated to a relatively easy 6-4 win over the Bruins. The first two periods were all Port Perry with Oshawa getting very few chances. Right from the opening faceoff, Port Perry challenged.. the Oshawa net- minder. The goalie was forced 'to make a big save on a Scott Brownson partial breakaway. The ensuing goalmouth scram- ble allowed Kam Cooper to score on an assist from David Justynski. Shortly after, Matt MacMaster stickhandled his way into the slot and Kam Coop- er again was there to tip in the rebound from Matt's shot. This put Port Perry up 2-0. The second period saw our Bs continue to press. Troy Hazel- ton and Joel Van Camp both had good chances early. Later in the second, Port went ahead 3-0 on a power play goal by "best effort" player Kam Cooper. A natural hat trick! David Justyn- ski was credited with the assist. Uxbridge did manage a goal shortly after on a shot off the de- fenceman, but Port scored an- other one at the end of the sec- ond to stay ahead by three at 4- 1. Scott Cunningham scored from a sharp angle wrist shot with an assist from John Bacon. In the third period, the Bruins pulled their socks up a bit and goalie Chris Thompson was tested numerous times - in particular on a breakaway by Oshawa. Matt MacMaster scored out fifth goal on a wraparound. The assist went to Murphy Irvine. This gave Port a 5-11ead but the Bruins were not finished yet, as they scored two quick goals, one on a power play, to pull within two. However, John Bacon wid- ened the lead again to 6-3 on a goalmouth scramble goal. As- sists to Grant Hooker and Troy Hazelton. Uxbridge scored the final goal to end the game at 6-4 for Port Perry. Chris Thompson got the win. Way to go, Peewees - your third win in a row! Keep practis- ing hard and good things will happen! Come out and watch our next home game on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. Cheer the boys on! Warming up Monday night to the thunderous, thumping sounds of Guns and Roses, little did our Panthers know that the 'boys from Belleville' were already warmed up and eager to play. The first period was hard fought by both sides but the strong- est performance came from goaltender John Babcock. John not only managed to save a Belleville breakaway but kept the oppo- sition from scoring on numerous occasions. After the flood, Belleville seemed to produce even more the second period. During this period there was a great deal of bashing, banging and bruising going on with a few of our players bearing the brunt of it all. We were close to tying things up on a breakaway by Kenton LeFort but he was robbed at the last second by a Belleville player finally catching up. (Even with a groin injury Kenton can sure turn on those whee 8). Later with a power play in Belleville's favor, they took advan- tage of the situation and added to their lead 2-0. Minutes later showing their strength once again they upped the score to 3-0. Not letting up, Craig, Ian and Kenton are hustling to get some- thing going but to no avail. Our third period provides us with a few chances thanks to the efforts of the Panthers who try to assert some pressure but un- fortunately the Belleville goaltender makes some brilliant saves to keep us from getting on the scoreboard. There was to be no joy' in Scugogville tonight as once again Belleville pulls an- other one out of the hat and with the wind knocked out of our sails the final score is 4-0. On Sunday, Nov. 13 the day following their home tourna- ment, the boys travelled to Uxbridge for a league game. With only nine skaters available for duty, due to work commitments, the Panthers put on a gritty display of hockey. Their hard ef- forts paid off in the first as Matt Hobbs was set up nicely by Ian Shrigley and buried itinto the net. Uxbridge tied it up early in the second but the Panthers roared back with two quick goals for a 3-1 lead. Scoring first Was Dany] Baths anintad by Ian Shrigley and Kenton Le- ort followed by Craig Laird on a deflection j Clarke and Kenton LeFort. ont fron deff Uxbridge narrowed the gap late in the period, but Jeremy Geer restored the two goal lead with a blast from in front. As- sisting on the play was Kevin Hobbs. In the third, the boys played disciplined hockey and ended up with a hard fought 4-3 win. John Babcock got the nod for goalie today and played a strong game. Chris Drury was his usual solid selfon defence. Good effort Panthers - keep it us. steam as they finally got on the scoreboard at the 13:26 mark of 2 J Tn Oi ma tga Pp
