"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" Les Parkes "Eyedealistix" at the Kent Farndale "EYEDEALISTIX" is a tongue-in-cheek title coined by artist Les Parkes which reveals several things about the upcom- ing exhibition at The Kent Farndale Gallery in Scugog Me- morial Public Library begin- ning this weekend. In the view of this artist there is no need to contrive abstrac- tion; it is naturally around us all the time. We simply have to open our eyes to actually see the dramatic spectacle of shapes. Mr. Parkes still reminisces on his beginnings in O.C.V.1., with teacher Dorothy Van Luvan and, following his stint with the R.C.A'F. during WW II, with stalwarts like L.A.C. Panton and Leonard Brooks in Toronto. He also appreciates the long rigorous career in advertising which developed his skill at il- lustration. Immediately after his resignation from a major packaging design company he signed on to teach graphics and interior design students at Dur- ham College. This was another unforgettable experience for him. Meanwhile, in Port Perry, he was keenly interested in the community art groups at Town Hall 1873, designing sets for lo- cal productions and acting in some. In fact, in 1985, Mr. Parkes was involved in the award-winning production of "Birdseye Center," writing the play, designing the set, building it on stage, as well as acting in it. For Scugog Shores Museum he created a set of "decorative prints of the museum buildings which was used as a fundraiser. One of his works is included in the soci- ety"s famous "Diploma" collec- tion which occasionally goes on tour to promote the best in Ca- nadian watercolour art. Among his most ardent sup- porters are the respected collec- tors Liana Sneyd and Kent Farndale. He is a member of the Art Gallery of Peterborough, Art Gallery Space, The Visual Art Centre of Newcastle, The Oshawa Art As- sociation and his work is well represented at the Eldon Gal- lery (Waterloo), Exploration House (Toronto) and Framer's Gallery (Port Perry).
