Juniors win opener Following two exhibition losses, Port Perry's IGA Junior As were eagerly apprehensive before the Central Ontario Ringette league's opening game against Whitby. Apprehension disap- peared quickly as Cara Vander Slagt set up Shona Moase for the first goal 27 seconds into the game. Fast-paced, end-to-end action produced scoring opportuni- ties at both ends when Brooke Shanley passed up to Laura Hooker who passed one to Jennifer Elliot in front of Whitby's goalie. Jen potted her first of two goals in this game. The second period saw Diane Vanderligt and Shona Moase work together to set up Cara Vander Slagt who put Port's Jun- iors ahead 3-0! Whitby's rushing threats were thwarted by Port Perry's defensive specialists and Katie Senyk's goaltending. Following a tremendous stick-check by Laura Hooker, with a sharp pass to Dana Hooker, who spotted Jennifer Elliot in all . alone, the Port Perry girls went ahead 4-0. As the clock wound down below two minutes, the "S" word was heard muttered and sure enough, Whitby pocketed two sudden goals to make this 4-2 score look much closer than it tru- ly was. P.S. The "S" word was shutout. Compton Cable Novice action The weekend of Oct. 15 and 16 was a busy and eventful time for Compton Cable's Minor Novice team. Parry Sound hosted a tournament where Port Perry found themselves facing Major Novice teams. Port Perry's first game was an early 7 a.m. on Oct. 15 against Glenbrook Rangers. Compton Cable finally put one between the pipes with a hard wrist shot by Keenan Geer. Kyle Mullen helped defensively clearing the puck. Ashley Lucas provided tenacious checking and Todd Lance showed spirited defensive play no matter what the size or speed of the offensive player. Glenbrook went on to win the game with good positional play and accurate shooting. The second game at 12:30 p.m. was a close match against the host club. Nelson Langmaid of Compton Cable got an early birthday present when he broke away to score Port Perry's lone goal. Jeff Tomcheski, Derek Goreski, and Ashley Lucas led the team in offence and defence. Tyson Savage showed great per- sistence in moving the puck, Taylor Churchill shone in a defen- sive presence and Danny Halward demonstrated heads-up play. : Goalies Leo Taillon and Mark Carnaghan kept the score to only 3-1. The final game saw Compton Cable going up against a Major Novice team from Bradford. The Bradford team dominated of- fensively but Port Perry worked hard and never gave up. Mike Lycett played some great defence and Cassidy Weber played well in his new forward position. Shane Jeffrey displayed a good checking defense in front of the net. Matthew Roth and Kory Bauer exemplified disciplined positional play. Leo Taillon faced dozens of shots playing goalie solo in this game and did well while gettinglots of practice. Despite a couple of good chances by Keenan Geer, Derek Go- reski and Tyson Savage, Compton Cable couldn't crack Brad- ford's shutout. Compton Cable faced superior puck control against Caledon Hawks Saturday, Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. Port Perry scored twice for 1 the first time with goals by Derek Goreski from Danny Hal- ward and Tyson Savage, and by Cassidy Weber from Matthew Roth. Despite their offensive flair Compton Cable came up short. On Sunday, Oct. 23 at 5 p.m. Compton Cable played a fine game against Markham. An improved team met the challenge of the AA opponents but Markham found some hopes near the end ofthe game to pull offa victory. Defensively Compton Cable kept the shot total down with the help of Jeff Tomcheske, Shane Jeffrey and Kyle Mullens. Offensively Danny Halward had a couple of rushes.
