Residents are warned of phone scam Durham Regional Police have issued a warning about a scam that promises residents a big prize -- then soaks them for big i Over the past year companies apparently operating out of Montreal have been contacting Durham Region residents by phone and 'informing them they've either won a vehicle, or that one has been found in a warehouse with their name on it. The targets are told that they should forward a fee or make payment to cover sales tax to have the vehicle shipped to them. The fees or taxes cited in the scam can range from $600 to $3,600, police said. In April of this year a Clarington resident sent $2,500, and received nothing, police said. Another Clarington resi- dent was contacted but didn't bite, and notified police. Last week two Oshawa resi- dents were called and given the same story, police said. Neither sent money, and they did call police. Police are telling residents that under no circumstances should they send money when given the telephone pitch. And they want to hear from anyone who has. Anyone who suspects they have been the target of a phone . scam is urged to call OPP at (705) 495-3899, or Durham Regional Police at 579-1520. Anyone living outside Durham Region should call their local police. An investigation into inter- provincial telephone fraud is currently being conducted by the OPP anti-rackets branch in North Bay; they are being assisted by the RCMP, and other agencies.
