"A Family Tradition tor 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, Sept. 27, 1994 - 11 At least six children have been hospitalized with pertus- 818 (whopping cough) across Durham Region. The Health Department has been tracking the pertussis outbreak since late August. ~ Whooping cough is a bacterial infection of the respiratory tract that starts like a cold. The cough, however, lasts for more than two weeks. A coughing spell is often followed by vomit- ing, breath-holding (apnea) or an inhaled breath ("whoop"). Whooping cough is very contag- lous; the bacteria spread from person to person through coughing, sneezing and talking. Children, especially babies, are at high risk. Pertussis vaccine makes the illness milder; it does not prevent one from getting or spreading the disease. Antibiotics usually cannot be given early enough to lessen the cough or other symptoms, but Outers Club bike hike By Liz Bredin The Othello Trip for Grades 11 to OAC went ahead on Tues- day. A good time was had by all. The Outers Club "Bike Hike" took place last week with partic- ipants enjoying a barbecue when they finished. Picture Day was Thursday, the 22nd. No date has been set for re-takes yet. The University Presenta- tions for OAC students are starting on the 26th, with Wil- frid Laurier and the University of Western Ontario due to present during the week. Band practice is Tuesday af- ter school and the choir starts on Thursday at noon. Museum concerts Sunday, Sept. 25 was another night to remember in the 135 year history of the Head Church on Scugog Island. The second in a series of free concerts sponsored by the Scu- gog Shores Museum was en- joyed by a near capacity audi- ence. The Dixieland Band set the toe-tapping tone for the most enjoyable evening. The main objective of these weekly meetings is to provide an opportunity for performers to perform. Sunday night we were delighted and thrilled to the music of two lovely young lady flute players, Nicole and Evette Hamelinck who live on Scugog Island and attend high school in Bowmanville. We cer- tainly must have them back. The main feature of the eve- ning was the Country Four Bar- bershop Quartet who, once again turned in an excellent, professional performance and thrilled us thoroughly. Alex Ingram kept us amused with his "Fun and Nonsense". On Oct. 2, there will be the annual Thanksgiving Service in the Head Church on Scugog Is- land and Oct. 9, being Thanks- giving Sunday, there will not be a concert. In fact, un- treated pertussis can be spread for up to three weeks, but treat- ed pertussis is contagious for only five days. The full 10 days of antibiotic (erythromycin) are needed to ensure the bacteria is completely killed, and that re- sistance to the antibiotic does not develop. Canadian pertussis rates are consistently higher than in the United States, suggesting that stricter control measures are re- quired. The pertussis vaccine protects against severe disease and complications like pneumo- nia and brain damage. Despite the vaccine's proven benefit, pertussis vaccination rates are Six children hospitalized with "whopping cough" lower than that of other com- mon childhood immunization rates. The Health Department is encouraging parents whose child has a prolonged cough, vomits or holds his/her breath after coughing to see their fami- ly physician right away. Chil- dren under seven years of age should be fully vaccinated against whooping cough. Adults and children, especially babies and toddlers, who have had con- tact with children with whoop- ng cough should see their doc- tor for antibiotics.
