Fair Board targets crowds with change By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star As the countdown to Port Perry's 142nd annual fair continues, organizers are working steadily on a program: of events aimed at injecting new life into the ever-popular event. Many of the fair's mainstay events will be part of the proceedings on Labor Day weekend, and a lot of new ones are being added, fair board president Paul Christie said in an interview last week. He said the fair board continues to come up with ideas for new attractions in an effort to keep people coming back, year after year. "Times are changing," said Mr. Christie. "You've got to change with the times, or you're out of business." Organizers are planning events from the fair's kick-off Friday night (Sept. 2) until the final day, Sept. 4. This year Friday night, which has typically been a set- up time, will be designated a warm-up evening, "to get people in the mood" for the fair, said Mr. Christie. A band will be playing in the beer tent -- run in conjunction with the Lions club, and set up in the track infield -- that will get things rolling. Then Scugog takes the stage, as locals are encouraged to strut their stuff during a talent show. The event is geared to be a fun evening rather than a competition, said Mr. Christie, and ought to be a great start to the proceedings. For the next three days, organizers have a host of new events, some of which will be run for the duration of the fair. Here's a list of what's planned: Applications are now being received at the Scugog Memorial Library for fi = THE KENT FARNDALE ART BURSARY Open to any gesident of Scugog wishing assistance in pursuing a specific field of art. Application forms available at the library. 0 Saturday is Kids' Day, and youngsters get in free. There will be events throughout the day geared toward the youngsters. 0 Pig Fans take notice: Pig Races and a Pig Wrestling Contest are on the slate. 0 Youngsters can pedal their way to prizes during the toy tractor pull, sponsored by the area's implement dealers. a On a larger scale, there will be a backhoe competition with operators focusing on precision and time. a Crafts fans will have to take in the display tent, where over the course of the weekend artisans will be displaying quilting, spinning, wood working, and a host of other crafts. : a If you're feeling strong, you can strap on a really silly- looking suit and take part in the Sumo Wrestling competition. Q Sunday night will be a special night for the area's young people as Much Music brings its video road show to the fairgrounds for a dance; the beer tent will be closed Sunday night. And of course the popular attractions from past years will continue, as the tractor pull roars its way down the track Saturday night and Sunday features harness racing and paramutuel betting. The whole package is designed to appeal to as many people in the area as possible, Mr. Christie said last week. "You've got to keep abreast :: of what the people are watching and what they're not watching," he said. Watch next week's Star for a full report on all the weekend's events. : Closing date for applications - September 15, 1994.
