Scugog Angels clinch first The Scugog "Angels," All-Ontario Champi- ons showed what they are all about, as they won both ends of the double header on Sunday night beating both their counter parts, the Port Perry "Scugog Angels" Midgets by 7-2, then handing the Whitby "Dubie Dodgers" a 10-7 defeat to clinch first place in the stand- ings with two games to play. "Angels"17 - Port"Angels"2 Tracy Smith started things off with a single and after stealing second base, scored on Nan- cy McConnell's single to give the "Angels" a 1- 0 lead. Then the Midget "Angels" tied it up as Sara Cain drew a walk, as did Robin Adamson. A ground ball to first moved the runners up a base, then Amber Wood singled down left field to score Cain to tie the game 1-1. The Scugog "Angels" Joyce Parkinson sin- gle followed by Cheryl Vaughan's single, Tara owder followed with a single of her own, driving home Parkey. Tracy Smith then sin- gled home Vaughan to give the "Angels" a 3-1 lead. The Port Perry "Sc Angels" added an- other run on Brooke 'Wilkinson's single and scored on a shortstop error. Kim Poppleton then singled before the inning ended. The "Angels" added two more runs on the top of the fifth when Tara Mowder singled and then Mandee Porter singled, before Trac Smith and Kim Stewart both had RBI ground- outs. The "Angels" added two more in the sixth as Cheryl Vaughan singled, followed by Tara Mowder's single, sending Vaughan to third to ut her in scoring position. Then a fly to right field by Mandee Porter scored Vaughan from third. Mowder moved to third base on the over throw, and then scored on Kelly Caldwell's single. The "Angels" added one more run in the sev- enth on Gena Spence's triple to left centre and then came home on Lisa Crooker's groundball out. Tara Mowder with hits led the attack at the plate as did Tracy Smith, Cheryl Vaughan had two each, as Cheryl Vaughan picked up her 15th win of the season. "Angels" 10 - Whitby 7 The Scugog "Angels" clinched first place in the Durham Ladies Fastball League this sea- son on a 10-7 win over Whitby "Dubie Dodg- ers." Angela Davis pitched her first win in two weeks after getting over a knee injury. Tracy Smith opened up with a walk, moved to third on Sheri Brown's bunt single, and then came home on Kelly Caldwell's bunt sin- gle as Sheri Brown went to third, then scored on Gena Spence's ground ball out. Lisa Crook- er cracked a single to left centre scoring Kelly 'with double header victory and then scored herself on Tara Mowder's sharp single to left field before the inning end- ed. The "Angels" added one more in the second as Tracy Smith tripled and then scored Gena Spence's groundout. : They added three more runs in the third as Joyce Parkinson singled, moved to third on a grounder to short and a bad throw to first al- lowed her to move to third and then scored on Nancy McConnell's single, followed by Tracy - Smith's single. Both players scored on Sheri Brown's triple before the inning ended. Whitby "Dubie Dodgers" got back into the: game as they put together six hits and an error to score four runs. They added two more in the sixth and two back to back singles and a field- er's choice to score two. Nancy McConnell sin- glad to start the fifth, followed by a two run omer by Sherri Brown-King. : In the top of the seventh, Whitby added tw more runs on three straight singles. The final score was 10-7 for the "Angels." With this win the "Angels" nailed down first place overall. Sherri Brown-King who missed the first four games as she was getting ready to get married this past weekend. She had three for four at the plate including a homer, and threw in five RBIs for the night. : Tracy Smith, Lisa Crooker, Kim Stewart who turned in a stellar performance in right field, along with Nancy McConnell. Angela Davis tossed a strong game, striking out five along the way. "Angels" 14 C) Oshawa Double BBs 1 This was to be the game of games, but didn't turn out that way. Coming off a 7-56 win over Cobourg the Double BBs were looking forward to their game with h A walk to Tara Mowder, and a single by Nancy McConnell, Joanne MacDuff then sin- gled home Tara to give the "Angels" an early ead. A big triple by Lesley Balson, and a sin- gle by Becky Moynes tied the game at 1-1. Both teams battled tooth and nail until the fourth inning. As the "Angels" broke the game wide open as Lisa Crooker drew a walk, stole second, and came home on Cheryl Vaughan's single to right centre. Tracy Smith drew a walk, then Tara Mowder down left field to bring home Vaughan and move Smith to third base. Nancy McConnell promptly cracked a single to right centre driving home two runs, then Joanne MacDuff tripled to deep right centre to bring home two more runs. The "Angels" added two more in the fifth on a single by Lisa Crooker a fielder's choice to force out Crooker, then Tracy Smith's triple to Turnto Page 15 H&M Wright Sox end season as senior champs H&M End Great Season By Capturing Sr. Tourney heir strong play all year car- ried over to the tournament as the H & M Wright Sox edged Don Frew & Sons to capture the senior played on Saturday. Both teams entered the finals as the top two teams in the round robin play that also in- cluded Blackstock Hardware and Port Perry IGA. - The Sox built up a command- ing 14-1 lead but the Frew crew never gave up and battled back: to make for an interesting end- ing with the Sox prevailing 16- 12. In the last inning, H & M went scoreless. However, Frew & Sons were not done as they scored four runs on the erratic play and fielding miscues by the H & M team. But pitcher Scott Malcolm settled down to strike. out the third out and give his team the victory. Basebal Wotten Carpentry 18 Aldon Transmission 9 The hammerheads took the first game of the playoffs with a convincing win. Brett Cham- bers led the offence with a long home run while Stephen Jensen and Johnathan Wotten turned in fine pitching performances to keep the Aldon team in check. Awards Day Awards Day A special reminder to all coaches, sponsors, parents and players that the Annual Awards Day-activities are this Sunday, Aug. 28. Hot dogs and pop will be available starting at 12:30 p.m. with the actual awards presentations starting at 1:30 p.m. This is a special day for all 'players as each one will get ei- ther a. trophy or a medallion. Please make a special effort to attend and support the "Kids of Cartwright". - Squirrels in playoffs This coming Thursday night, the Greenbank Gamblers will meet the Oshawa Flying Squir- relsin an 8:15 p.m. playoff game at Greenbank Park. : This year's double knockout playoff formula has all teams in the playdowns with winners meeting winners and two losses eliminating any team from fur- ther competition. The Flying Squirrel's_ Pete Landers is fresh off pitching a complete game my victory over the Port Perry Antrims which could be bad news for the Gamblers. Last week, the Gamblers edged out the Port Perry Juve- niles at Greenbank by the close score of 3-2. Port Perry got off to a good start on hits by Jeff Card and Darryl Vander Slagt and took an early 1-0 lead in the sec- ondinning. The Gamblers had six hits during the game but their of- fence was centred in the bottom of the fourth when Greg Newell hit a booming home run to tie the game and when Brian Till doubled, he came around on Paul Goreski's long homer to left centre and the Gamblers had a 3-11lead. Mark Goreski settled down to claim nine strikeouts during the game and was cruising along with two out in the last in- ning when Vander Slagt singled (for the third hit Goreski al- lowed in the game) and then a high fly to right field got lost in the lights and suddenly the score was 3-2 and the tying run on third base. Goreski bore down and retired the final out ona fly to centre field. "Turnto Page 17 - Cartwright Minor Ball's sea- son is drawing to a close after 'another successful year. The last of the tournaments are finishing and with the close of the season, the last event is Awards Day. All players in Cartwright Minor Ball are to re- ceive an award. This year's event will be run the same as last years. It will got under way at 12:30 p.m. on unday, Aug. 28 (the day after the Blackstock Fair). All beef hot dogs and a pop will be avail- able for just $2 between 12:30 Ball awards Aug. 28 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. The main event will get underway at 1:30 p.m. David Fisher, Chaplain for the Toronto Blue Jays and the Montreal Expos will be our guest speaker this year.
