Port Perry Senior Citizens Inc., the seniors' club serving the area, has a membership of 190 and will celebrate its 32nd anniversary in December this year. During that time the club has been striving to provide an atmosphere of activity and friendship for the area's seniors, said current president Stan Rickard. Vision & Aging Common Age-Related Vision Problems: PRESBYOPIA: a decline in the eye's focusing ability causes virtually all of us to need bifocals or reading glasses by age 40 or 50; approximately 84% of persons 65 and older require comrective lenses. CATARACTS: are a clouding of the lens in your eye located behind the iris; it is not a growth of film growing over the eye. Early cataracts can be managed by regular eye examinations; more advanced cataracts can be effectively treated through surgery. Age-related cataracts cannot be prevented; however, chronic exposure to Ultra Violet light can accelerate the cataract process. Wearing sunglasses and hats to avoid UV may be helpful. GLAUCOMA: is a disease caused by elevated fluid pressure within the eye which damages the optic nerve. If untreated this damage can cause severe vision loss. This disease can be treated by medication and in some cases, by surgery. Since a majority of glaucoma patients do not have symptoms, regular eye exams are important in detecting the condition in its early stages. Dr. Workman provides ocular-visual examinations that assess. everything from basic vision to eye coordination and focusing abilities. More importantly, eye health is assessed to check for both inner and outer eye infections and inflammations and these exams include cataract and glaucoma testing. Prescription eyewear is also available with friendly, efficient service. Dr. Workman received his B.Sc. Honours degree in Life Sciences from Queen's University in 1987, and his Doctor of Optometry degree in 1992 from the University of Waterloo. He grew up in Oshawa, and now resides in downtown Port Perry. Previously, he practiced in Bradford, Aurora and at Huronia Regional Centre for the developmentally delayed. "It's a social outlet, and a recreational outlet." The club holds regular euchres and exercise classes for members and guests, but there's much more going on. Mr. Rickard said the club's executive are always on the look-out for new ways in which to meet the needs of the area's seniors. - "We're always trying to look at something new, something different." he said. The club often organizes bus trips, and there are regular meetings and pot luck suppers, often with themes. A choir allows members to stretch their vocal cords, and the' club often hosts speakers and entertainment. Membership dues for a year are just four dollars -- seniors can join at age 55, but aren't allowed to hold office until they're 65 -- but there are other requirements, says club member and past president, Roy Grierson. : Besides the low membership of four dollars a year, everybody is expected to spend time helping out-in the kitchen for teas and dinners: "That's part of their membership," he said. Mr. Rickard agreed the club will only be as good the effort made by its members. "We're always looking for people to work in- the program," he said. "Not just partake, but assist." N In addition to programs and fellowship, seniors can avail themselves of the club's reference library, which contains materials and information on the many issues seniors today face, be it dealing with government agencies, preparing taxes, or dealing with health-related matters.
