"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" Municipal boat launch receiving $85,000 By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star The municipal boat launch is undergoing an $85,000 facelift, which will see close to 80 marked parking spaces being created. The facelift, part of the gov- ernment infrastructure pro- gram, includes marked parking spots, islands, curbing, flowers and trees. The concept is to have the area run in a more orderly fashion. The parking lot will include flowers and trees because "itis a parking lot in a park and parks are trees and flowers," said Marilyn Pearce, Ward 2 Coun- cillor and Parks and Recreation Committee Chairman. The new set-up will create 56 regular parking spots and 23 boat, trailer and bus parking spaces. According to Councillor Pearce the Scugog Chamber of Commerce had approached the committee suggesting parking spots be made available for tour buses. Many residents have voiced their concerns over the islands taking up too much space in the new design, but Councillor Pearce said the curbing and is- lands are essential to the whole design. With no catch basins being facelift implemented, the curbing is necessary to direct the water flow away from the area. "The design is to direct the water off the site. It is crucial that there is curbing to contain the water," she told the Star. Although the cost of the pro- ject is $85,000, it is substantial- ly less than the cost of the Scu- / gog Arena parking lot. The cost savings is due to the curbing, which she said saves money in the long run. The parking lot, which has at times been confusing for driv- ers, creating a great deal of con- flict, will be of asset to the town as it will create adequate park- ing, will enhance the businesses which back onto the lot and add a completed look to the Rotary Park and walkway, she added. The parking area will be en- hanced by a circular drive around the parking lot, allow- ing drivers to circle the lot in search of a parking space, help- ing the traffic flow and conges- tion. "It will enhance the area and completely change the way it was," she said. The area is already serviced by electricity and light stan- dards will be taken into consid- eration in the plans. But, light- ing in the lot is a couple of years Perry was in the midst of a facelift last week. The $85,000 Infrastructure pro- ject will create uniform park- ing off, until more money is allocat- ed, Councillor Pearce said. In conjunction with this pro- ject a storm catch basin will be installed at the end of Queen Street. The basin will stop the water run-off into the park in the area of the Latcham Centre and will allow the township to fill in holes and ruts in the park- inglot. The projects, which are part of the infrastucture program are funded one third by the mu- nicipality, which comes out of reserve funds, one third by the federal government and one third by the provincial govern- ment.
