EE Lo. EEE CE 2 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 19,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Two local industrial firms set to hire more employees From page 1 Carole Plummer, manager of the Minacs Group in Oshawa which handled the application process, said a broad range of applicants were screened for the positions with varying amounts of experience. She admitted, however, she was surprised with the amount. Ms. Plummer anticipated a greater number than what actu- ally came. And call it a sign of the times, she noted many of the qualified people were anxious to find em- ployment. Laurie Bannon, a single mother from Oshawa, was one of the many people who filled out an application for the posi- tions. Out of work for a year, she is "willing to do just about any- thing." Ms. Bannon said it is tough finding a good paying job and $6 an hour will not support she and her child. Shelley Peebles, a friend of Ms. Bannon's, is in a similar sit- uation. Also a single mother on Mother's Allowance, she has been pounding the pavement for two years looking for work. Jim Brown, 19, of Blackstock and a recent graduate of Port Perry High School, lined up in the hopes of gaining "a better job." He is currently working on afarmin the area. Robert J. "People coming in (to file an application) are willing to do anything," Ms. Plummer said. "They're excited that employ- ment was coming to the area." Ms. Plummer said the pros- pective applicants had a posi- tive frame of mind. "It appears a load had been lifted from their shoulders as there was work available." Many came in anticipation of the long-awaited openings at Port Perry Metal Processing, a plant scheduled to open in the fall at the old Johnson Controls plant. And although it was not for this job, they were not disap- pointed as they were able to file applications for both jobs. A similar process will be held at the plant later this week to ap- ply forjobs at the metal process- ing plant. These jobs include machine operators, production supervis- ors, set up operators, shipper/ receivers, .maintenance me- chanics, and quality control su- pervisors. = > Jon Ty She Foot Lo; oper Dreatfturty, Sanches Fe Country Dinners Oren do) - 7 days a week Garervations not alhrays necessary _SLenced wear SLSABO ) IN I I 2 Toe Font Dork 3 107 Dyeen 57, Sort Derry 5-722 A 1 per pkg. / 5. 175 Ap WH HE SCOTT ANDERSON/ PORT PERRY STAR Laurie Bannon and her friend Shelley Peebles were two of more than 70 people to file applications for various available jobs.
