Service, Quality & Style Since 1881 Hailed as heroes By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star For Bob Haynes, the reality of saving a toddler's life did not sinkin until later. But both Mr. Haynes and a neighbor are being recommend- ed for a citation after the men performed CPR on 17-month- old Susan Hall when she was plucked from Lake Scugog in Williams Point on July 6. "I was extremely busy and it really didn't sink in until after- ward," he said of bringing the girl back to life. "I was still rea- sonably calm, but (after getting to the hospital) I looked down and my hands were shaking." It was at this point he knew he and Peter Parker, a neighbor on Williams Point Road, had saved the young girl from drowning. "I love Susie," Mr. Haynes said. "It was difficult to avoid be- ing overwhelmed by emotion." But it was a matter of beingin the right place at the right time for the former Oshawa para- medic, who was helping Susie's father move a refrigerator in- side the home when the toddler slipped away from the watchful eyes of four people. A frantic search of the area found the girl a short time later face down in the water 15 feet from shore. It is estimated she was in the water for eight to 12 minutes. She was immediately handed to Mr. Haynes who began clear- ing her airways, before perform- ing CPR and mouth to mouth. - Mr. Parker, who has no emer- gency training, began massag- ing her heart with coaching from Mr. Haynes. "He was extremely calm and did exactly what I said to do. He did an excellent job," said Mr. Haynes. The pair continued to breath life into the toddler for the next 15 minutes, finally getting a heartbeat and breathing activi- ty. By that time emergency crews had arrived. "I thanked God that he gave her back her heart," Mr. Haynes said. He continued working on her _---- for rescue of 17- _- month-old toddler BOB HAYNES She was later airlifted to the Hospital for Sick Children where she was listed in serious condition. : As aresult, the pair have been: recommended for a citation by Durham Regional Police. De- spite being honored by the at- tention, Mr. Haynes has a more pressing concern. "My concern is still with Susie and until she's home and fine, I'm really not interested in all that," hesaid. "Ithinkit'sa won- ~ derful thing. It's good-news in- stead 'of 'bad, but. until she's home, I won't consider it good news." This is the second time trage- dy has struck Dave Hall and his young family. Earlier this year, his wife Margaret was killed in a car accident near their Cae- sarea home. 10% O Wedding Orders in the ambulance enroute to Community Memorial Hospital Port Perry Star in Port Perry. ) OFFICE CENTRE And all that was going 188 Mary St., Port Perry through his mind during the . ride to hospital was "please God 985-7383 let herlive."
