Weeks maybe months later, a small re- traction appears within a mass of articles and is often over- looked. But the damage is done. The accusation is remembered. This can be particularly hurtful to a person and their family who happen to live in a small com- munity where most people know one another. The stigma can plague a family both social- ly and professionally for a long time to come. This practice, if instituted, would create personal costs that far outweigh any benefit. As a result of that brief cam- paign, more than $5,500 was collected - no small feat! This, of course, could not have been done without the help of more than 50 taggers and, whether a tagger took in 50 cents or $50 is not the point.
