T "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 28,1994 - 3 Councillor requests traffic Impact study on Island Road By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Scugog's Regional Councillor is calling for a traffic study on Scugog Island in light of a pro- posed gaming facility. The Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation is proposing the construction of a 25,000- square foot charitable gaming organization. This facility would include Bingo and Monte Carlo-style games. First Nation officials are pro- jecting as many as 2,000 people per day to frequent the facility. And with it will come extra traf- fic. This has caused concern for many who fear the road, which serves the Island, is not suited to handle the additional traffic. Regional Councillor Yvonne Christie, who also serves as the region's vice chairman of the Works Committee, has called on regional staff to prepare a traf- fic study on Island Road. According to the councillor, 200 to 500 additional vehicles are expected to travel the road daily. She wants a report pre- pared to indicate if the road will be able to handle the increased : volume. Councillor Christie requested the report on June 14 and said it could be ready as early as today (June 28), but believes a more realistic time frame is July 5. "I don't know what the capa- bilities of the road are," she said. "I'm suggesting we study the impacts." Councillor Christie said the regional road is always a con- cern as it is a narrow and twist- ing road, which requires fre- quent care particularly in the winter months. The road is also the only ar- tery for access to the Island. The councillor said the study could be used as backup materi- al in the township's request for additional funding. Country Area residents have ex- pressed concern about the con- struction of this facility. These concerns include traffic safety, water and hydro capacity and the social and economicimpact. Despite the concerns, region- al officials are not expecting much of achange. "I don't think there will be a roads problem," said Regional Chairman Gary Herrema. "I just don't think it will attract thousands of people." Chairman Herrema acknowl- edged that a traffic light may need to be installed at the top of the Island at Highway 7A and Island Road, however. Earlier this year, Chairman Herrema suggested handing over the responsibility of the re- gional road to the township, but has since shelved the idea. He said it will be the region's re- sponsibility to maintain the road. SCOTT ANDERSON / PORT PERRY STAR The Port Perry Senior Citizens Club hosted an open house on June 22 with a mix of contributions from seniors, commu- nity and regional groups to recognize the 32nd anniversary of the club as well as the 20th anniversary of the Region of Durham.
