"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 21,1994 - 5 Scugog "open for business," says mayor By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star "Scugog i 18 open for business." That's the optimistic word de- livered by Mayor Howard Hall. And the mayor has reason to be feeling a little more optimis- ticthese days. Two weeks ago, he announced a company would be moving into the vacant Johnson Con- trols building and bringing with it much needed 75 jobs. Port Perry Metal Processing, a division of Makagon Indus- tries, inked a 10-year deal to set up shop in the 60,000-square foot building. It will manufacture first stage and tailored blanks for the automotive and appliance in- dustries. Itis expected to set up shop by early September. The building, which has been vacant for more than three years, has long been a symbol of the economic hardship of the community. Mayor Hall termed the building, which sits on Re- gional Road 2 on the outskirts of Port Perry, "an eyesore." With the recent announce- ment, Mayor Hall is hoping oth- er industries are attracted to the area. "I just hope that more people will be interested in moving here," he said. "I think more in- dustries should look here." The mayor pointed to some of the benefits in moving into the community including a skilled and available workforce, and its proximity to the Greater Toron- to Area (GTA) market and other markets in southern Ontario. "There's opportunity for in- dustrial growth," he said. Another example of the op- portunities for growth is the fact an industrial park on the Sixth Concession, which has sat idle for a number of years, has been resurrected. After the first developer went A three-vehicle accident on Friday evening at Highway 12 and 7A sent two people to hospital with minor injuries. Po- lice say a vehicle making a left-hand turn onto Highway 7A was the cause of the accident. The driver has been charged with an Illegal left turn. The mayor termed the plans for the area as a "prestigious in- dustrial park." "When it's finished, it will not look like any other." Mayor Hall said there is po- tential for fairly quick develop- ment, as the area is zoned, the roads have been constructed and services are designated. "I would think that if some- body wanted something, they could get it immediately," he said. And while the mayor has pledged to do all he can to at- tract new business to the area, he has not forgotten about the long-time established firms prospering in the township. "It's really important to look after the ones we already have here." He points to Mother Jack- son's Open Kitchens, which has increased its production and re- called staff, as well as Techstar Plastics which has introduced a new process for plastic docks and 18 contemplating a third shift. "There's an example of two in- dustries in town that employ about 250 people," he said. He notes other companies in the area have expansion plans as well. KIDS! ! KIDS! KIDS!
