Juveniles fail to make final, but improved play encouraging This week's sports report for the Juvenile Merchants Fast- ball Team is sponsored by Mill- work Home Centre, Key-Bar Of- fice Equipment, Sutton Group - Glenn McCoy, and R.B. Moase, C.A. Last weekend, the Port Mer- chants were in New Hamburg for a two-day tournament. Al- though they did not make the fi- nals, the team was happy with the continuing improvement in their play. In game one, the Merchants beat Waterloo 8-1 and the game was mercied after five innings. Game two saw Port meet their arch rivals, the Oshawa Juveniles, and lose 4-1 in a fiveinning game called due to time. In game three, the Mer- chants beat New Dundee 7-0 and the game was once again mercied after five innings. In game four, the Port Juveniles were eliminated from the tour nament by Wingham in a disap pointing 5-0 loss. This was a 0-0 ballgame until the fifth inning when Wingham scored all their unearned runs. Oshawa Juve- niles went on to win the tourna- ment beating Wingham 10-1 in the finals. This was a Junior Men's tour- nament except for Wingham, Oshawa and Port Perry who, along with Scarborough and New Liskeard will be part of the Juvenile teams playing in the All-Ontario in Oshawa on Sat- urday, August 13. This will be a one-day tournament only. On June 9, the Greenbank Gamblers won a well-played game against the Merchants. The Juveniles appreciated the positive comments which ap- peared in the Gamblers' article last week. Highlights of this game were the home runs by Scott McLennan and Darrell Vander Slagt, and the super pitching by Jeff Card. On June 14, Mickey Finns visited Port Perry and made up for their recent loss to the Mer- chants by winning 7-1. The only real positive of the game was a long home run hit by Jeff Card in the sixth to break the shut- out. On Thursday, June 16, the Merchants visited the Oshawa Squirrels at the Durham Fields and played a close ball game. Going into the seventh inning, the Merchants were losing 5-0 when their bats suddenly came alive. Card, on with a single and Kay with a walk were scored on a two-run RBI single by Em- pringham. Venning, on with a single was scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Shrigley which narrowed the gap to 5-3. [Laird"s hot bat came to the plate with two out, with Empring- ham at third and Shngley at second, and any hit would tie the game. Laird had already hit Turnto Page 2 ~ py Gamblers win and become three-peat tourney champs The Greenbank Gamblers were at the Baltimore Fastball Tournament on the weekend and after five tough games in the extreme heat and humidity, the Gamblers finally captured the trophy and top prize money. This is the third consecutive year the Greenbank team have won this major tournament and this year was possibly the toughest as the Gamblers pre- vailed through five tough, hard- fought ball games that included extrainnings. Greenbank edged Colborne Rutherfords by an extra-inning 2-1 score on Saturday morning and won another 2-1 cliffhanger over North Fred. Junior on Sat- urday afternoon. Sunday morning saw the Gamblers get past the Stouff- ville Juniors by a 2-0 count and then edge past North York Aces 3-21in the afternoon. These victories put Green- bank in the main event final against the host Baltimore team who feature ex-Gambler pitcher Wayne Wells, and the fans were looking forward to an- other key match-up. Unfortu- nately, Wells pulled a muscle in his back swinging at a high pitch and was unable to partici- pate in the championship game. Todd March took the mound for Baltimore to oppose the Gamblers' Mark Goreski and when the dust finally settled, Greenbank came home with a 4- 1 win to take the championship and the $1,000 first prize. Jim Chilvers and Mark Gore- ski each won a pair of games for Greenbank and John Logeman pitched the 2-0 shutout of Stouffville with some last in- ning help from Jim Chilvers. The Gamblers only managed to score a total of 13 runs in the whole tournament but they used the home run ball to their advantage as they connected for six round trippers in the five games. Greenbank shortstop Pete Oosterholt had a hot bat in the tourney and cracked out a total of three homers during the weekend with other home runs coming off the bats of Brian Till, Steve Durham and Jim Chil- vers. This is a difficult tournament to win even once but to do it in three consecutive years is a source of pride to the Green- bank squad. Back in Oshawa City and Dis- trict league play, the Gamblers went into Oshawa Durham Fields on Monday night and got past Oshawa Mickey Finns by a 2-1 score, thanks to good pitch- ing and defence and a fourth- inning home run by Greg Ne-« well. | Thursday night at Green- bank Park, Don Beaton led the Gamblers past the Oshawa Double "B" Juveniles by a 10-4 score. In addition to Beaton's three hits, Steve Durham, Brian Till and Paul Goreski added two hits apiece with Tre- vor Till, Rod Real and coach Ken Goreski rounding out the twelve-hit attack. This Thursday, the Oshawa Juniors are in Greenbank Park to play the Gamblers at 8:15 p.m. Greenbank's next tourna- ment is at Waterloo on July 1, 2, 3 atthe I.S.C. Qualifier. Legion Squirts 11-4 winners Un June 13, our Legion Fast- ball stars were in Richmond Hill and a threatening sky didn't save our hosts as Port jumped out to a quick 7-0 first inning lead on the way to an 11- 4 win. Several of the Richmond Hill runs were thanks to our er- rors but they weren't able to capitalize any further. Defensive highlights were two throw-outs on steal at- tempts by catcher Matt Sker- ratt. Matt also combined with Tim for a forceout at the plate. Mike Koury and Sean Jeffrey alertly moved around the bases from first to second to take ad- vantage of defensive lapses. Tim Jones pitched the win on eight hits, two walks and four strikeouts. He led his team as well with a four for five effort at the plate. Mark Richardson was three for three while Matt Sker- ratt and Aaron Lycett had two hits. Mike Koury, Matt Breen and Jefl Kane stroked singles. Richard Bryant walked and scored in our first inning out burst. The league leading Bramalea team visited Port Perry on June 16. They took advantage of three lead-off walks and their heads-up base running to show why they are in first place. Fi- nal score was Bramalea 9, Port 5. Despite the final outcome our "golden boys" kept the score close at 6-5 until the final in- ning. Port highlights were a div- ing catch by Matt Breen in left field, a tagout at home by Matt Skerratt despite being bowled over and a nice throw from cen- tre field to home plate by Bra- den Tarbotton. Mark Richardson had three hits, while Matt Skerrat and Aaron chipped in two hits each. Singles were by Chris Monsma and Chris Skerratt. Tim led off twoinnings with walks.
