"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 7,1994 - 5 Mills ejected from legislature for refusal to retract remarks concerning gaming facility By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star A tough stand on the pro- posed gaming facility on Scugog Island got a local MPP ejected from the legislature last week. Durham East MPP Gord Mills was turfed from question period on Thursday following a shouting match with Progres- sive Conservative House Lead- er Ernie Eves. In questioning Consumer Re- lations Minister Marilyn Chur- ley, Mr. Eves said residents of Scugog knew nothing about the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation's plans to build a 25,000-square foot gaming facil- ity on the Island until recently. Burnett From page 1 with Cape Breton he wanted to coach in the NHL, but he was not in a hurry. With the experience he has gained, and was still gaining with day-to- day contact with professional athletes, as well as the opportunity of making all coaching decisions, he would be ready for a coaching job in the NHL when the opportunity arose, he said. Mr. Burnett started his coaching exploits behind the bench of both the Port Perry Modacks and Uxbridge Bruins of the Junior C Hockey League, before taking a turn as the assistant coach of the Oshawa Generals. From there he spent three years behind the bench, doubling as General Manager, of the Niagara Falls Thunder where he was twice named coach of the year. Jo He requested on behalf of the Township of Scugog that the province withhold granting a charitable gaming licence until all issues were addressed. These issues include adequa- cy of wells and septic in the area, as well as studies which are needed to determine if ser- vices such as hydro, police and ambulance are adequate. But Mr. Mills took exemption to this attack, shouting down the house leader and accusing him of lying in the process. He was ejected from the legislature after he refused to retract the accusation. "On a matter of principle I didn't think that type of ques- tioning and accusation was helpful in that this issue is the concern of a lot of people," he said. Mr. Mills argued that the res- idents knew last year of the First Nation's plans and ac- cused the conservatives of "making political hay at the ex- pense of other people." The Durham East MPP said he was agitated by the way in which Mr. Eves handled the sit- r= LL aR a El A Prusid Hairstyling eS \ Ia) Q /) Expires June 30/94. 985-7101 or 985-7102 257 Queen St., Port Perry. uation. He believes an issue should be discussed and clari- fied with the local member per- sonally before it is addressed in the legislature. "I thought he'd have good eti- quette and have the courtesy to confront me you're going to talk about some- thing in a member's riding you should confirm the facts," he said. Despite being turfed from the legislature, Mr. Mills does not regret his actions. "I was absolutely incensed. It was just a bloody lie and some- times you get mad."
