. 22 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 7,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" ------ -- [2 Cadmus Country Club held an open house on Saturday to mark the opening of the club which offers trout fishing. Joining in the opening are Tina Jovanovic, Zahid Zivojevic, from Union- ville, Ann Hogan, Judd Jovanovic, and Lorenz Bazarin, from Nestleton. \ J N With the racing schedule nicely underway at Mosport Speed- way, we offer you an early season update. Reigning ThunderCar champion Doug Todgham holds the points lead after two events and added to his total Saturday night by taking one heat victory. Other heat wins were claimed by Scott Harrison, Ken Perrier and Trevor Veitch. Twenty-seven cars took the green flag for the 15 lap feature race and a lead pack consisting of Ritchie Mannette, Rob Fulton and Janetville's Dwayne Glasbergen dominated the show until a yellow flag situation at half distance. Race leader Mannette found his position seriously challenged on the restart but man- aged to hold on for the checkered flag. Oshawa native Fulton claimed the runner-up spot with Scott Harrison taking third. Hlasbergen crossed the line in fourth place, just ahead of Todg- am. Because of the deaths of racing stars Neil Bonnett and Ayrton Senna, there has been much talk this year about the dangers of racing and this aspect of the sport was demonstrated in Satur- day's Street Stock race. After four incident free heat races won by Andy Warbutton (two), Bob Kish and Glen Fricker, attention was turned to the 20 lap feature event. The first 11 laps held nothing but exciting racing action with Fricker sitting in top spot when a caution light appeared for a minor accident in corner two. Willowdale's Graham Brown slowed for the yellow but was tagged from behind sending him spinning into the front straight wall. Back marker Duke Paul arrived on the scene in the middle of a pack and suddenly found himself heading directly for the passenger door of Brown's stalled racer. With nowhere to go, Paul locked up the brakes on the #65 car but nailed Brown with a sickening impact. Brown emerged from the fracas uninjured but the race was red-flagged as Paul was removed from his destroyed car on a backboard complaining of a sore neck and ribs. The ambulance crew then moved Paul to a local hospital for observation. When racing resumed, it was Oshawa's racing realtor Andy Warbutton who took the checkered flag ahead of a charging Brent Sullivan. Mike Cross in his Dodge Challenger edged out Bob Kish for the final podium position. With his Saturday night "sweep," Warbutton has moved into a virtual tie with Joe Mallette for the lead in the overall season's standings. The fans may have been numbered by the violent incident in the Street Stock race, but they were left totally dumbfounded by the final event of the night. Because of the small fields in the Sportsman and Late Model classes, it was decided to combine the two divisions for the fea- ture race. Unfortunately, because of the speed differences between the classes, driving, passing and lapping turned the event into a nightmare and six caution periods only added to the confusion with grid realignment being the main point of contention. It took almost an hour to complete the 30 lap race and here, to the best of our knowledge and subject to change, are the results. Port Perry's Rod Sauder took the overall and Late Model win ahead of Joe Goncalves, Dwight Brown and Mike Frederick. The Sportsman trophy went to Ken Paston who led Vic Auger, Daryl Leatherdale, Brian Bassett and Bill Northam to the line. Regular Saturday night racing continues next weekend at Mosport Speedway while some of us must endure the hardships of a weekend in Montreal for the Grand Prix of Canada. Till next time...au revoir from Corner Five. Scugog Soccer kicks off season The Scugog Youth Soccer sea- son got underway last week with a number of exciting matchups. Coaches, remember to hand in game reports at the clubhouse after each game. Under Six Results Second Hand for Kids had a busy week with a game on Tues- day night against Laurentian Bank. Laurentian came out on top with a great team effort. Leeanne Adam and Kristopher Barchuk played a good running game and Joey Frey and Britta- ny Jimmo came up with some excellent shots. Nicholas Weis- flock was strong in goal for Sec- ond Hand. The Bowen brothers, Shawn and Cody, played a ter- rific game and Shawn came close to scoring. On Wednesday night, Cody got the first goal of the season, assisted by Nicholas Weisflock. Under Seven League On Tuesday night, Brian's Towing showed up with a full roster of players to take the game from Port Perry Lions Club by default. Michael Wal- lace and Michael Wilson (no, not that one) each came on strong. Lake Scugog Lumber got their first victory with a 6-4 fin- ish against Komputer Klinic. Stewart Medford picked up a hat trick, and Kyle Parge, Dus- tin Eldridge and Janna Jeffrey each notched one for the Lum- berkids. Danielle Bougeois scored twice, and Matthew Mill- er and Emily Potier added one each to make it a close game. Under Nine Results There are a full 10 teams playing in the under nine divi- gion this year. Joe's Pizza played their first game against Reach Park Motors, and ended up with a 4-1 win, with all players showing excellent po- tential. Goals were scored by Pat Lewis, Jonathan Taylor and Nelson Langmaid with two. Amanda Curry, Kendall McAl- lister and Erica Bulloch played a strong defensive game to hold Joe's Pizza to only one goal, scored by Erin Geary. Joe's coaching staff also noticed an outstanding effort by Matthew Hertzberg. Manvers looks like it will be a tough team to come up against, as Willowtree Farms found out in their game. Brandon Spear- ing looks like a player to watch, as he scored eight goals in his first outing! It's not a one-man team though, as Derek Shasta added a couple more. Honorable mention goes to Keenan Geer and Cameron O'Connor from Willowtree. Raglan Welding and Cot- trell's Cuspids played to a 2-2 draw, with goals by Tyler Weis- flock and Danny Halward. Another exciting match was played when Air Durham just edged Tim's Renovations in a 3- 2 finish. Ryan O'Leary potted both goals for Tim's. Derek Go- reski got a pair for Air Durham, and Tyler Cunningham kicked in one. Antrim House looks to have a strong team if their game against Burketon is any indica- tion. Timothy Cruickshank got hig first hat trick of the season. Aaron Bray, Andrew Evans and Kyle Mullins each got a goal as well. Jamin Gilles managed to get one through for Burketon to break the shutout. Under11Results The Tegal Eagles had two games last week. They dropped their first game to Waterfront Cafe 4-1. Special mention goes to David Halward with three goals and Spencer Churchill with one. Strong goaltending ef- forts by Peter RE staninorio- lous and Gabriel Benschop as well as the fine defensive work of Nicole Ansell and Sarah Walker helped to secure the vic- tory. Kevin Robbins got the lone marker for the Eagles. The Legal Eagles fared better on Wednesday night against Burketon, with a 6-2 victory. Wes Langmaid had a terrific game for the Eagles. Green Apple Cabinets start- ed their season off well with a win over Haugen's Heroes. Jus- Quebec hands Angels tin Moffat potted three goals, and Ryan Kelly and Clayton Gilmour added one each. Hau- gen's coaching staff saw terrific potential in a number of players. Matthew Kamminga scored the only goal, but great goaltending by Scott Symes and forward work by Grace Michel, Erin Edwards and Trevor Weis- flock indicate a promising fu- ture for the team. Lastly, Darlene Colton Pho- tography and Willowtree Farms met for a hard-fought battle that ended in a 0-0 tie. Honorable mention goes to Re- becca Aked, Ryan Blair, Shan- non Pickford and Steven Wil- liams. 2-1 loss in ball action The Scugog "Angels" lost the first game to Quebec 2-1 in ex- trainnings. The "Angels" got things roll- ing by scoring on singles hit by Sherri Brown and Nancy McConnell, along with two pass balls, one of them getting enough away so that Brown could tear home and score. The "Angels" could not do anything with the pitching of the Quebec hurler as she continued to baffle the ladies. Then Quebec broke through with a single on two fielder's choices, putting a runner on third, then another single by a Quebec batter allowed them to tieitup 1-1. Using a runner on second, in International rules, the "An- gels" could not get the runner in from third. Quebec, using the same with a runner on second, moved the runner on a fielder's choice and scored on an over- throw to third, allowing Quebec to win 2-1. Oshawa Double "BBs" 4-0 The Oshawa Double "BBs" hooked up with their league ri- vals and the "Angels" were handed a 4-0 loss. Both teams were on even terms until Oshawa sent eight batters to the plate. A pair of early walks, a double to score two back-to- back singles, then another dou- ble to score two more before the inning ended. The damage was done and they never recovered. Cheryl Vaughan then settled down and held the Double "BBs" off the scoresheet the rest of the way. The "Angels" were only allowed one hit, while los- ing 4-0. London 3 Scugog 2 The London Jrs. struck early and fast and took an early lead 3-0 over the Inter. "Angels". The "Angels" didn't get anything go- ing until the fourth inning. Gena Spence led off with a sin- gle, Tara Mowder singled, then Cathy Davis singled home the first run, before a double play erased any chance the "Angels" had. In the fifth, Nancy McCon- nell singled along with Gena Spence, Kelly Caldwell drew a base on balls, loading the bases. Tara Mowder then flied out to right, scoring McConnell. A per- fect toss to third base got Gena Spence, thus ending the inning and the game. Detroit 10, Angels 0 Detroit Dalys handed the Scugog Angels a textbook de- feat in softball, as they showed what running and bunting can doin winning a game. The game was marred by an accident. The Scugog "Angels" pitcher Cheryl Vaughan took a line drive in the forehead and went down. Che- ryl was then taken to the hospi- tal to make sure everything was okay. (The word is, she's okay!) The team was kind of down af- ter that but they finished the game. Sherri Brown got the only hit, but what a lesson. Durham Pony Club Durham Pony Club's second Prince Philip Games meet of the season was held in Norwood June b. The games are relay rac- es on ponies with four or five members per team. All three levels, "A", "B" and "C" had a fine showing with first place wins across the board. The com- bined Masters level, which is for players over the maximum level for P.P.G., placed second. This puts all teams in a good position to goon to the finals in August.
