"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 31,1994 - 3 Joyce Kelly seeks seat as Ward 4 councillor Life-time Cartwright resident Joyce Kelly announced this week she will be seeking the seat for Ward 4 (Cartwright) in the November municipal election. Mrs. Kelly has served the past nine years as a trustee on the Durham Board of Education but said it's time for a change. "I'm very upset with the board's decision to eliminate | one trustee in Scugog Township." she said. The Board of Education decided earlier this year to cut five trustees from the board as JOYCE KELLY a cost saving measure, with Scugog losing one. At the time of the cuts, Mrs. Kelly said she thought it was a big mistake and a sad day for Scugog. "The people of Scugog deserve a lot more," she said following the announcement. Lack of representation, along with the fact that she has no children left in the school system were instrumental in her decision to run for local council. Mrs. Kelly said she has always had a desire to serve on local council and this seemed to be the right time. Having spent her entire life in the Cartwright area, she knows the community well and feels she can provide good representation. And while her heart and interest is in Cartwright, Mrs. Kelly said it is important to look at the overall picture, and she plans to work for the best interests of Scugog Township as a whole. Mrs. Kelly's brother Harvey Graham served the past term as Area Councillor, but announced in April he will not be seeking a seat on local council this year. The group is opposing the es- tablishment of the facility for a number of reasons including the social concerns and the abil- ity of the Island's services to "handle the building. "On behalf of a large group of taxpayers on Scugog Island, we are opposing the establishment of a gambling casino on the Indi- an reservation on the Island.
