The team is en- tered in a 13 team loop making up the York-Durham league. Players returning from last year's Provincial Champion- ship team are Mark Richard- son, Chris Monsma, Aaron Ly- cett, and Sean Jeffrey. The team opened their season on the road on May 17 against Pickering and started off with a convincing 14-3 victory. Mark (and Tim Jones in relief) no-hit their hosts and combined for 10 strikeouts, six walks. Leading the way offensively were Matt Skerratt (two hits), Chris Mon- sma (three walks), Sean Jeffrey (triple), Mark (two hits), Aaron (double and triple), Matt Breen (single) and Braden Tarbotton (single). Chris Skerratt and Richard Bryant got their first taste of rep calibre ball and an opportunity to show some of the new skills they have been dili- gently working on in practice. Jeff Kane is just a few adjust- ments away from being a force at bat again. The return part of the home and home series started off on the wrong note as our umpire Tailed to appear for the game and we were forced to forfeit the two points. An exhibition game was played instead and our Le- gion boys: triumphed by a 6-2 margin. Mike Koury scored a run and saw action at second base while Mike Wiseman got the nod to start at first base. Offensively Chris Monsma had two walks, Sean had two hits and Chris Skerratt hit a deep ball to left field for a triple. He got around the bases so fast he almost pagsed the runner ahead of him! Mark faced 11 batters on the rubber, allowed three walks, no hits and had five "K"s. Tim faced 11 also, al- lowed two walks, four hits and had one "K". : On May 24 the team was on the road against Markham and we were lucky to escape with a 7-7 tie despite having a 7-1 lead going into the last inning. Our run production was led by Sean's three-run homer, one hit by Matt Skerratt, Chris Mon- sma (two hits), Aaron (one hit). Tim (one hit), Braden (one hit), Chris Skerratt (one hit), and Mike Wiseman (one hit). Mark started and struck out five of the first six batters he faced and finished with 10 "K"s, Soccer Rebels The Senior Rebel girls took part in the DYSSA finals on Thursday held in Port Perry. Game #1: Rebels vs. Joan of Arc of Maple. The game was scheduled to begin at 9:15 but due to the weather the game was delayed until 10:30. The weather didn't cooperate but the teams took to the field in a driving rainstorm which never did let up. The Rev- els were determined to make the best of the poor situation and scored in the first five min- utes to take an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Paula Reed. Lori Bus- cher scored to put Port up 2-0 at halftime. A change of ends and the Rebels keep"the pressure on as they could sense a win was only 35 minutes away. Mid-way through the second half Loni Buscher scored her second of the game and upped the score to 3-0. Any chances by the opposi- tion were soon eliminated by the strong play of the defence and Sarah Coynein goal. Championship Game: Rebels vs. Pereyma. After suffering a defeat at the hands of Pereyma in the LOS- SA finals the rebels girls had win on their minds. This game started at 2:15 and the only change in the weather was that it got colder and kept raining. Lori Buscher continued her strong play and opened the scor- ing early in the first half to put her team up by a 1-0 lead. Later in the first Pereyma managed to tie the score at 1-1. Both teams fought hard to get the next goal, but the second half ended with the teams deadlocked at one goal each. Overtime was start- ed and each team did their best to score with the eventual win- ner being scored by Pereyma in the dying seconds of the second overtime. This was a hard loss for the rebels as they had controlled the play for much of the game but just couldn't get the winner. Gamblers tied The weatherman kept the Greenbank Gamblers off the ball diamonds this past week and the league rules state that the next scheduled game be- tween rained out teams be- comes a four point game which keeps the schedule on tract. After the first three weeks of the Oshawa City & District Fastball schedule, the Gam- blers find themselves in a log jam for first place with two oth- er teams. The Gamblers, Oshawa Mick- ey Finns and the Oshawa Juve- niles all sport three wins and one loss records for six points and the Scarborough Royals have only played three games and stand at two wins and a sin- gle loss, the same as Oshawa Flying Squirrels. This week Greenbank visits the Port Perry Antrims on Tues- day night (May 31), for an 8:30 p.m. game at the lakefront and host the Oshawa Flying Squir- rels in Greenbank on Thursday night at8 p.m. Pete Landers 1s making a comeback this year with the Flying Squirrels and is pitching well by early reports. Landers is the only local fastball player to be inducted into the Canadian [Fastball Hall of Fame and in his heyday was considered one of the best in the world. Has Pete still got it? The Greenbank Gamblers will find out this Thursday night at Greenbank Park. six walks and four hits. A combi- nation of errors and walks were disastrous in the final inning. Tim came off the bench and struck out the last batter of the game with the bases loaded. On May 28, the Legionaires were in Oshawa to test our- selves against our neighbors. If the coaches didn't have grey hair after the Markham game, for sure they have not, as the team again allowed their oppo- nent back into the game at the end and had to escape with a 7-6 win and bases loaded yet again. Defensive highlights were a tag-out at home by Sean (catch- ing) from Tim at first base as well as a nice catch by Chris Skerrattin centre. Tim came on in relief for the last inning without the benefit of a warmup and after his initial wildness settled down, he struck out two in a row. Sean led the attack with three hits, Matt Skerratt had two, Mark had a double and sin- gle and Tim had one safety. Matt Breen played well at third and Richard alertly covered his right field position duties and scored his second run of the sea- son. mark had eight strikeouts, nine walks and allowed just three hits. As the team starts to jell, hopefully our runs-against will be reduced and our points will come easier!
