"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, May 25,1994 - 17a GM sales increase 14 % An increase of 14 per cent in new vehicle sales for GM of Can- ada in the first four months of the 1994 calendar year is the re- sult of a combination of great GM products and significant improvements made by dealers in the area of customer satisfac- tion, Tom Mason, vice- president of marketing at GM of Canada, said recently. "Over the past several years our dealers have focused on making significant improve- ments to enhance the buying and ownership experience of their customers. Along with great products, this is another key reason for our strong sales showing since the beginning of this year," Mason said. In April 1994, General Mo- tors of Canada truck sales con- tinued to grow, up 11.6 per cent from the same period last year. Despite steady showroom traf- fic, new car sales slipped 6.1 per cent this month, compared to the extremely strong sales of April 1993. Overall, new vehicle sales are up 14 per cent for the 1994 calendar year to date. "One of the most significant initiatives our dealers have un- dertaken is training," said Bob Sowden, GM manager of retail training. "Our surveys indicate that our customers want to deal with a knowledgeable sales staff. Likewise we want our sales people to be the best trained and most professional in the industry, so they can properly match our customer's needs and wants with the ap- propriate General Motors vehi- cle. A new vehicle purchase rep- resents a significant expenditure, so we want to en- sure that our customers are to- tally satisfied with all aspects of their vehicle purchase and own- ership." "In the fall of 1992 GM insti- tuted an extensive training pro- gram for our 4,700 retail sales professionals nationwide. One facet of the program provides salespersons with "hands on" product training, at a site near their dealership. Five full-time instructors travel to 35 loca- tions across Canada, and con- duct 610 training sessions an- nually, to keep sales personnel abreast of the ongoing technolo- gy and design improvements being incorporated into our GM vehicles. The result is approxi- mately 10,600 person days of training yearly," said Sowden. Another initiative designed to enhance on site training, pro- vides dealers with video tapes covering topics such as product comparisons and customer 1in- teraction. Add to this an exten- sive salesperson's handbook, which explains the features and benefits of each vehicle, and the result is a very comprehensive training program. "In order to provide more in- formation for our customers, GM developed two video pres- entations designed for use ei- ther at the customer's home or at the dealership. The tapes -- "GM's Total Safety Systems" and "GM's Total Warranty" -- deal with important issues for today's vehicle buyer, and both have received very positive re- sponses," Sowden said.
