"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, May 25,1994 - 5a Separate School Board sets budget for '94 at $146 million The Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board approved a 1994 budget of $146,828,038 at a special board meeting on Wednesday, May 11, 1994. The average mill rate increase for Durham Region Separate School ratepayers across the seven municipalities within the board's jurisdiction will be about one per cent. Earlier in budget delibera- tions, trustees were facing the prospect of higher mill rate in- creases combined with possible program cutbacks. Some meas- ures in the 1994 General Legis- lative Grant regulations served to assist the board in maintain- ing existing education pro- grams while minimizing the property tax increase to its rate- payers. The board and its various em- ployee groups have worked to- gether to face the challenges of the Government of Ontario's Social Contract. Success has been reached in staving off job losses while at the same time in- creasing staff ratios to meet So- cial Contract obligations. Un- paid leave days have been taken by employee groups in both 1993 and 1994. Discussions will continue with respect to addi- tional unpaid leave days that may be required during the bal- ance of 1994 and 1995. The board will be taking full advantage of the Canada Onta- ro Infrastructure Works Pro- gram. The total local share of board participation in this pro- gram is included in the 1994 budget. Specific board projects have yet to be approved at the provincial and federal levels but will be identified during the fall of 1994. Technological Studies identi- fied as part of the core curricu- lum in the Common Curricu- lum, released in the spring of 1993, will receive much atten- tion by the board staff and stu- dents in 1994. Resources will be provided to all elementary schools to allow for the intro- duction of this program in the primary and junior divisions (Grade 1 through Grade 6). Seniors learn about history of their club All the seniors attending our May 11th meeting were wel- comed by Eileen Hern and Mu- riel Rickard. The Hawaiian theme selected for this meeting was evident in the attire worn by the greeters and many of the members. Following the singing of our national anthem, a rendition of the Island song "Blue Hawaii" was performed with all present joining in. Mary read the min- utes of previous meetings and correspondence was presented by Stan. Executives reported on the activities relating to our club. The history of the club for the period 1966-67 was presented deceased members will be en- tered into The Book of Remem- brance at our parent organiza- tion (The United Senior Citizens of Ontario). The Hawaiian performers (our seniors) in full Island regal- ia (some quite hilarious) sang three songs with that south seas rhythm. Everyone joined in the singing of two more num- bers to complete the entertain- ment. Each member holding a winning draw ticket received a pineapple as a prize. The deco- rations on the walls, the table- cloths and the delightful cakes and squares were 80 represen- tative of Hawaii - so our thanks to Muriel and Stan Rickard for all their efforts in preparing by Roy Grierson.
