Gamblers turn miracle to gain split Last Thursday night, the short-staffed Greenbank Gam- blers went into Thompson Park for a doubleheader against the Scarborough Royals, and came home with a split of the two games thanks to some late in- ning heroics by the Gamblers in game two. Game one saw the Gamblers' Jim Chilvers and Scarborough's Blair McBratney hook up in a tight pitcher's duel (and a 1-1 score into the bottom of the sixth inning), when the Royals scored twice for a 3-1 victory. Greg Newell and Dan Balach- orek had a pair of hits each for Geenbank with Don Beaton adding the only other hit to the Gambler attack. The nightcap of the twin bill started out as a disaster for the Greenbank club, when Paul Foucalt cracked a two-out, grand slam home run in the first inning to give the Royals a 4-0 lead. Mark Goreski on the Gam- bler mound ran into difficulty again in the second inning due to some shaky defensive work by the Gamblers and Scarbo- rough added three more runs to take a 7-0 lead after only two in- nings of play. Goreski and the team settled down and held the Royals off the scoreboard for the rest of the game. Then, in the top of the sixth inning, Jim Chilvers led off with a triple into the right field corner and Greg Newell fol- lowed with a base on balls. Don Beaton lined a long drive off the centre-field fence to score both runners and Greenbank was on the comeback trail. Paul Goreski singled home Beaton and scored himself on Chad Venning's single over sec- ond base and the score was 7-4 after six. The top of the seventh saw Dan Balachorek with a lead-off single, move to second on a wild pitch and score on Greg Newell's line drive single, and the score went to 7-5 Roy- als. Don Beaton singled to put Gambler runners on first and third and with two out, Green- bank's catcher Paul Goreski clouted a mammoth three-run homer over the left-field fence and the Gamblers had come back from a 7-0 score to take an 8-7 lead, going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Mark Goreski set the Royals Peewee MoJdacks The Port Perry MoJacks Pee- wee softball team started their York-Durham league last Tues- day here at home against the Oshawa Shamrocks. Reid McTaggart made a fine catch in right field on a ball that started to fade fast on him. Reid's speed sure came in handy on this one. In the bottom of the first, Ryan Hawkins started the game off with a sin- gle, however, we were not able to get him across the plate. There was no scoring in the second inning. Clayton allowed a single and gave up a base on balls but the defence came through and would only let the runner reach third. In the bot- tom of the inning, Port hit two infield pop-ups and a ground out to leave the score at 0-0. In the third, Clay gave up three singles and a base on balls before the coaching staff decid- ed to take him out with a sore leg. Chris Jones came on in re- lief striking out two and giving up one hit. With eight batters coming to the plate, Oshawa was only allowed to score two runs. Port dug down in the bot- tom of the inning to even up the score.
