Cartwright ball growing faster than economy Major League baseball and especially the Toronto Blue Jays have had a tremendous im- pact on organized minor ball. Again this year, Cartwright Mi- nor Ball has seen an increase in the number of youths register- ing to play ball. Last season saw the introduction of hardball to the Cartwright area. In previ- ous years only softball had been available. With the Jay's win- ning the World Series, hardball has become more popular in the area. This year there are now seven hardball teams, up from six a year ago. The softball teams have increased by two teams over last season. This year will see the continuation of rep ball. The members of the rep ball team travel to various com- munities representing Cart- wright. This season's team is being sponsored by Warren Rohrer Minihoe and Landscaping of Nestleton. The team will be called the Cartwright Diggers. John Dawson of Port Perry will coach the rep team this season. Players are now being con- tacted by their coaches and team practices are being sched- uled. The softball team lineups for the season are as follows: for T-Ball (ages four, five and six) the teams are Blackstock Lion- ess, Super Spud, Blackstock Peowes The Peewee MoJacks Fast- ball team got off to a good start to the '94 season. The boys had an exhibition game against the Oshawa Shamrocks last Tues- day evening here at home. Der- ek Tindall, who has never played for a rep ball team, start- ed the game off with a good catch in deep centre field to set the defensive tone for the game. Clayton Brown went to the mound for the first two innings and allowed only two hits while striking out four batters. Port Perry scored three runs in the bottom of the second in- ning. Clay, Ryan McQuade and Ryan Hawkins all crossed the plate after reaching base on walks, an Oshawa error and a couple of nice singles up the middle. Jon Froats came on to pitch the next two innings. He al- lowed only one hit and a base on balls while striking out one bat- ter. Jon forced the Oshawa team to hit pop flys or infield grounders and the defence did the rest. Port scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Clay hit a double, Mike Versage hit a single and Ryan Hawkins got a double to add to his single from the second inning. Chris Jones came on to pitch the last three innings and al- lowed two hits while striking out five. He struck out all three batters in the seventh inning to end the game. Batting 1,000 on the night were Clayton Brown and Ryan Hawkins. Batting 500 were Mike Versage, Jon Froats and Brad Monsma. Darryl Dalton went one for three as he hit his first double of the season. In the coaches corner after the game Dave, Dennis and Pat Figure Skating Club, and Anal- da Garden Centre. The next group is ages seven and eight. They are the Tyke level, which include Turner Green Giants, Mike Baker Automotive, J.C. Flooring, Lishmen's, Cart- wright Youth Council and Swain Seeds. Youths, ages nine and 10 play at the Mite level. The mite teams are Ash or Em- bers Flames, MKM Eggbeaters, Blackstock Lions, Martyn Con- sulting, Asselstine's Yamaha and Carpet Warehouse. The Squirt division comprises of 11 and 12 year olds. This year teams are Antrim House, Cum- mings Backhoe, Pine Ridge Glass Service and Nestleton Store. The last division in soft- ball are the seniors. These are youths rangingin age from 18 to 15. The senior teams are H&M Wright Sox, Blackstock Hard- ware, Don Frew & Sons, and Port Perry IGA. There are seven hardball teams slated for play this sea- son. These teams play half their games in Port Perry and the bal- ance in Cartwright. This has been arranged through aliaison with Scugog Baseball Associa- tion. The Tyke baseball teams (ages nine, 10 and 11) are Wot- ten Carpentry and London Life MoJacks action were impressed with the mid- season vi that the boys were making this early in the season. Ryan Hawkins made a nice tag on a runner going from first to second and then threw out the runner going to first for the first double play of the season. I don't think it will be the last one either. Jeff Ashton at catcher also made a nice throw to Ryan Lazers. The 12 and 13 year olds are the Pee Wee division, which are Marlin Travel and the Causeway Cougars. All Flags Shell is the Bantam team, made up of youths from 14 to 15 years of age. The oldest baseball players are the Midgets. They range in age from 16 to 18 years. Their teams are the Cartwright Express and Raglan Industries. The team uniforms should be arriving very shortly, so the players should be all decked out In their new game shirts for their first game of the season. Opening night is Monday, May 23 with games being played at various diamonds in Cart- wright. - Ball games will be played Monday = through Thursday evenings throughout the sum- mer. Cartwright Minor Ball en- courages those who would like to come out and cheer for your favorite team to do so. We can guarantee you excitement and thrilling ball action without the cost of an admission ticket. The dates this summer are July 11 to 29, weekday mornings, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to noon. Three weeks of fun and games that make learning and progressing easy and enjoy- able. Young people from ages sev- en to 16 are coached in the ba- sics of stroke production at all levels of play, from beginners to advanced intermediate.
