I -- PORT PERRY, ONTARIO - TUESDAY, APRIL 19, 1994 SERVING PORT PERRY & SCUGOG TOWNSHIP SINCE 1866 "wend, Official sod turning Monday morning Canterbury Homes breaks ground By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Response to a new housing development in Port Perry has been phenomenal, representa- tives say. In fact, days before a shovel turned the first piece of sod to mark the start of Canterbury Common, 21 homes had already been sold. An open house in Port last week attracted more than 500 interested people from all parts of the province. Company offi- cials had expected a crowd of 200 people. "It was unbelievable," said Quorum Development presi- dent Mark Dawson, noting peo- ple were lined up 30 minutes be- fore the planned 4 p.m. opening. Canterbury Common, to be built on the Brooks Farm prop- erty at Regional Road 8 and Re- gional Road 2, is a 248-unit rec- reational community on 125 acres of land overlooking Lake Scugog. The community will be attrac- 1994 an average year as winter releases icy grip of Lake Scugog April 16 While spring officially arrived almost a month ago, most area residents don't consider winter's really over until the ice disappears from Lake Scugog. A walk along the shore of the lake just before dusk on Friday night still revealed a large flow of ice covering much _ of the lake, but by Saturday morning it was all gone. So, if you're-a record keeper, mark down Saturday, April 16, 1994 as thie 6fficial-day the ice deft Lake Seugog. T last time the ice disappeared from the lake on this date was 63-yéars ago, in 1931. And the response at last week's open house was over- whelming. Twenty-one buyers secured lots in the first phase of the development which will see 96 of the 248 homes built. Occu- pancy is expected in the fall. The golf course will be ready forusein 1996. "Everybody thought it was a good concept, at a good time," Mr. Dawson said, noting the golf course was also a drawing card. Local officials are also excited about the project. "I'm really excited about it," Mayor Howard Hall told the Port Perry Star last week.
