The Ladies Bible Class met at the home of Lexie Pettus on Wednesday evening. President Aldine Wick chaired the meet- ing. The meeting opened with the singing of "Were You There?" The scripture portion Hebrews 11:1-10 was read by Bernice Gardner. Meditation by the president entitled "Faith", followed with prayer by Ber- nice. The hymn "Because He Lives" was sung. Lexie was in charge of the program. Her sub- Ject was "Why So Many Denom- inations?" A social time was en- joyed over a cup of tea. Last Sunday, Rev. Sheina Smith's sermon was titled well attended "Where is Emmaus?" trom the scripture Luke 24:1-35. Em- maus is wherever we go to es- cape the truth. Ourlives change when Jesus comes to our Em- maus, whether we believe or not. The choir sang "It is Well with my Soul". Looking ahead to Saturday, April 30 at 10 a.m. Many hands are needed to do spring cleaning at the church, which will in- volve a general cleanup of the Church grounds, painting exte- rior window frames and wash- ing windows. All those willing workers are asked to bring their own necessary equipment, i.e., ladders, scrapers to do win- dows, rakes and window wash- ing supplies. Even lunch will be provided. I'm sure this will pro- vide lots of fun and laughs for everyone. Theo and Joan Knight en- joyed a happy family gathering at their daughter's home in Orangeville on Saturday. The occasion was the birthday cele- bration for two-year-old Eric Ewing, son of Jim and Elaine Ewing. On Saturday evening, Grant and Sheila Parrott, Doug and Florence Ashton, Sharmen Porter and Debbie Batten at- tended the Spring 94 Gospel Sing at Mohawk College, Ham- ilton, with "The Torchmen" from St. Catharines and two other groups. To celebrate 25 years in gospel music, a live vid- eo was produced, featuring the Torchmen, counted as Canada's number one southern gospel quartet. This inspiring evening was enjoyed by all who attend- ed. While here they have visited points of interest and friends that Myrtha met when . she spent the summer here two years ago with Dale and Janet VanCamp and family. On Friday evening, Harvey and Joan Graham, Gerald and Joyce Kelly, Elaine Kelly of Wa- terloo (yes, she still lives in Wa- terloo, it is Gerald's sister Elaine Kelly who lives in Buck- horn) and Esther Kelly (who is practice teaching in Midland High School) were Friday sup- per guests of Peter and Eliza- beth Peeters, Courtney and Kathryn, celebrating Court- ney's fourth birthday. Later they attended the Talent Auc- tion at Omemee United Church. Cartwright High School cele- brated Literary Excellence on Thursday afternoon. Sixty-four students, including 25 from Grades 7 and 8, shared their stories and poems. They also participated in several creative story-telling activities. The af- ternoon started with the Junior Band entertaining with several musical numbers. Representa- tives of the local Branch of the Legion presented awards to the following students - Roy Anger, Genevieve Kendall, Jennifer Mills, Adam Worboy, Kyla Vi- tek and Jeremy Davidson. Kyla won at the Branch and Zone lev- els for her Intermediate Essay and Jeremy Davidson's Senior Essay has won all the way to First at the Provincial Level. We wish him success as his es- say moves on to the National competition. Congratulations to all of these students on their excellent achievements. The Blackstock United Church was filled on Sunday af- ternoon when family, friends and acquaintances attended a memoyial service in honor of Rev. Clarence Ferguson, a na- tive of this area, who passed away in December in Alberta. Rev. David Shearman conduct- ed the very impressive service. Clarence's two daughters, Pat Pretty and Maryllis Dongel- mans, both of Orillia, each spoke, giving personal glimpses of their father. Floyd Nicholson spoke on behalf of the Beacock family and Rev. George Connol- ly, a retired United Church minister, who had worked with Clarence for many, many years in the Christian Education Di- vision of the church, spoke of these years of association. A reception hosted by the U.C.W. followed this service. Mrs. Clarence Ferguson of Al- berta is spending some time with Thelma and Lloyd Wright. Next Saturday will be a Family Day at the Rec Cen- tre and Arena when there will be a Trike-a-thon, craft sales, Old McDonald's farm and many other fun events. The Cartwright High School staff have formed a fund raising committee and are in the pro- cess of organizing a giant yard sale at the High School on Satur- day, May 7. In order for the sale to be a success, we need the help and generosity of the families in our community. We are asking for donations of used items to sell or craft items that may be used for silent auctions or raf- fles. If you would like to donate anything, contact the school at 986-4241 and we will come to pick up the items. After visiting over coffee, tea and muf- fins with jam and cheese, the leader of the Morning Unit, Edith McLaughlin, opened the meeting with a poem "Spring- time". The worship was taken from March Madate "The Earth is the Lord's" and was led by Thelma Wright. Eileen McLaughlin intro- duced Michelle Balson who dem- onstrated and modelled "Week- enders" spring and summer clothing collection in her own de- lightful manner. Edith McLaughlin thanked Michelle and closed the meeting with the Bizpah Benediction. Blackstock Busy Bakers by Amy Aldred On Tuesday, April 5, the Blackstock Busy Bakers had yet another meeting. We had an- other guest. Her name was Mrs. VanCamp. She showed us how to make an apple pie and a cher- ry pie. Some of us got to make lit- tle cherry pies. While we did this, the older girls made cream puffs. The pie and cream puffs were good. (We only had one pie because the others hadn't fin- ished baking.) Then the meeting was adjourned.
