Mr. Goss, who was instrumen- tal in having artificial ice installed in the Blackstock are- na and chaired the building committee which joined the are- na and the recreation hall com- plex, was being remembered and honored for his efforts on behalf of recreation in the township. Merrill Van Camp, represent- ing the Blackstock Recreation Committee, opened his address by saying "tonight we are hon- oring a person who has prob- ably done more for recreation in this community than any other other person." This community, within a community, is designed to appeal to active adults who desire a more leisure lifestyle in a high quality development. Some of the features of this project include tree lined streets with traditional street lamps, a network of paths for walking, cycling or strolls through natural wildlife habitat along the edge of Lake Scugog. Along these walkways residents will encounter small gaze- bos, park benches and ponds designed to compliment the area. In addition to the passive recreational and leisure facilities, the development will also feature a championship 9-hole golf course and a prestigious club house. Floor plans and model homes will be available to view at an information meeting this Thursday, April 14 at the Latcham Centre in Port Perry between 4 and 9 pm. Mr. Van Camp presented a plaque, to Mrs. Goss on behalf of the Recreation Committee which recognized the "vision and dedication" of Mr. Goss in joining the arena and recreation hall into the Blackstock Recreation Centre. Mayor Howard Hall described Mr. Goss as a small man with a big heart who worked extremely hard for his community. In paying tribute to Mr. Goss, Mayor Hall presented a plaque on behalf of Scugog Township and suggested it should be placed in a spot of honor in the Rec. Centre so others could rec- ognize the contributions he had made to recreation in the community. Also present for the evening was Durham MPP Gord Mills. Although having never met Mr. Goss, he said "it is apparent John Goss left a legacy of hav- ing served the community well." Mr. Mills presented Mrs. Goss with a lapel pin and the prestig- ious "Corps D'Elite Ontario" Regional Award. This award of esteem, from the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation, is presented in rec- ognition of outstanding contri- bution to the development of recreation. Following the presentation, Mrs. Goss spoke briefly thank- ing those attending and saying she was "ovc . whelmed." "I believe John did everything to the best of his ability, and did it well," she said choking back tears. Mrs. Goss described her hus- band as a very determined man who, if an obstacle was put in front of him, would find another way to accomplish his task. Mrs. Goss took the three plaques home to show family and friends, but two will be returned later this year to be hung in a place of honor in the Recreation Centre. A fitting honor for John Goss, so the community will remem- ber him in perpetuity as "a man with a vision who made a dream come true." . ---------- ~~ a ----_ iad i
