"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 12,1994 - 3 Planning underway for arena addition By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star A local councillor is calling for a comprehensive study before commencing on an addition to Scugog Arena. Scugog council voted in favor of the $65650,000-addition to the arena as part of the federal- provincial infrastructure pro- gram. The project includes a 6,000- square foot addition to the are- na to accommodate a multi- purpose hall. This addition was first proposed in a 1990 study. But Ward 2 Councillor Mari- lyn Pearce says more thought must be put into the project be- fore the township pays out its share of the cost. Councillor Pearce is con- cerned too much is being taken for granted in the four-year-old study and council must take a sober second look at the plan. At the heart of her argument 18 the cost of the project. The 1990 study called for a 6,000- square foot hall with a capacity of 500, warming kitchen and storage areas at a cost of $650,000. But she fears the cost has ris- en since the study was complet- ed. "We can't seem to agree on what we are building in terms of how many dollars we have." Councillor Pearce called on council to appoint an architectu- ral design team to prepare a fea- sibility report. "We don't have enough plan- ning of the preliminary design to get into the project," she said. "Instead of stalling the project, we must do a prelimary design taking into consideration 1990 and 1994 construction costs." This study will provide coun- cil with a better understanding of the direction in which they should proceed, she said. With a prom ysed two month turn around tine at the provin- cial and federal levels, the pro- ject is expected to begin in the early fall. Council auctions properties It wasn't the sale of all sales, but the township did recoup some outstanding taxes at a land auction last week. Five properties were on the auction block to collect monies owed from back taxes. Two properties each were in Caesarea and Nestleton, and a fifth property was in Port Perry. Three of the five properties were sold, with no takers found on the other two. These parcels now become the ownership of the township. Parcels of land at 38 Park Street in Caesarea ($3,433) and 3790 Regional Road 57, Nestle- ton ($3,255) were taken for the asking price, while a minor bid- ding war occurred on a piece of property at 19261 Scugog Point Road in Nestleton, before stop- ping at $4,600, this was $270 above the asking price. A parcel of land on Simcoe Street in Port Perry and a piece of land at 104 Summit Drive in Caesarea saw no buyers and therefore became the property of the Scugog. The township was forced to put these properties up for sale after the taxes had fallen into arrears for anumberofyears. Lishman's geese disappear before flight back starts Bill Lishman's flock of young Canada Geese 'have literally "flown the coop." When Mr. Lishman traveled to Virginia last week, it was with the knowledge that his 16 hand-raised geese had taken- off, presumably for their home in Purple Hill, but by Monday morning none had been spotted. The watch for these special geese continues on both sides of the border, and Mr. Lishman is asking the public to keep their eyes open for Canada Geese with gray bands around their neck. If you happen to see any geese with these bands, you are asked to contact Mr. Lishman at 986-4384, or leave a message if no one is home.
