"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 5,1994 - Local anglers talk fishing with the pros By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Area anglers turned out at the Latcham Centre on March 30 to "Talk Fishing" with pro an- glers Wes Lavergne and Pete Pokoluk. The "Let's Talk Fishing" sem- inar, sponsored by Willy & Son, was aimed at teaching anglers the techniques the pro fisher- men use to catch fish. It dealt with practical on the water tac- tics which will increase your an- gling success. Through diagrams, slide shows and a question and an- swer period, area anglers left the seminar knowing how to think like a fish. The first point of the seminar was to stress the formula of Fish +Location=Fishing Success. Because fish exist for three reasons, to eat, not to be eaten and to make more fish, 90 per cent of fish can be found in 10 per cent of the water. They will be near a food source, some- where where they can hide and close to spawning areas. The hosts showed that fish are creatures of habit and it is their nature to relate to some- thing; whether it be rocks, is or tree stumps. Thé hosts of the show offered many tips to the audience, in- cluding how to handle the murky waters of Lake Scugog. First thing in the morning is when fish are active and both fishermen agreed the buzz bait was their favorite top water bait for active fish, who have a large strike zone. In any lake as the day chang- es the angler must adapt. As the sun comes out, the strike zone decreases and fish go deeper. Anglers should then change to a spinner bait, according to the hosts. The color of choice for the pros is white with a purple trailer. A change in blades on the lure is also essential. They change to a silver blade on sun- ny days, and a gold blade or cop- per blade on ied days which are overcast. When fishing an area for the first time Mr. Lavergne said itis wise to put out contact markers when an angler gets a hit, or to mark the growth of a weed bed. On a lake such as Scugog, which becomes heavily matted and stained as the season pro- changing to bigger baits, either double bladed or ones which make a sound. The trick with all baits, Mr. Pokuluk said "is to open the gaps of the hook." As to where to fish, Mr. La- vergne suggesting to look for the place where you don't want to A. your boat and go there. "I look for the heavist, thick- est mounds of weeds on a hot, sunny day and that is where I go. There will be fish there," he said. In weedy areas, of which Lake Scugog has an abundance, fish- ing with a plastic worm is the best way to go. gresses anglers have to adapt by In weedy lakes such as Scu- gog, you want to drop the worm to the bottom. The most impor- tant part of using the plastic worm is to keep it stsaight. Con- trolling the head of the plastic worm is the most important as- pect in bass fishing, they said. The two anglers travel across Ontario presenting "Let's Talk Fishing." Mr. Lavergne is a sports fishing educational teacher, tournament profes- sional and outdoor writer while Mr. Pokoluk is a sports fishing lecturer and outdoor writer as well as the 1991 Angler of the Year. The $160 proceeds from the event were donated to Commu- nity Memorial Hospital. : Mrooklin Village Shoppe dene ladys' clothiens you ne cuunited to aur Preview Own Mew Romantic Spring Fashions Receive a FREE COLLECTOR TEA POT (with any $200 purchase) ~ one per customer ~ quantities limited! ~ ENTER OUR FREE DRAWS with any purchase Please Join wo for this Spring Event!
