Firefig- Za « "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" thers from both Scugog halls were called to the scene at 1:30 p.m. and fought the blaze for approximately seven hours. The home was totally engulfed when the emergency crews ar- rived. According to Durham Reglonal Police the owner of the home, Robert Boomhour, a police officer, had an electric heater on in the laundry home when he went to check on his baby upstairs. When he returned the smoke alarm had been activated and the house was filling with smoke. Mr. Boomhour was able to get his children and pets out safely. Damage to the home is set at in excess of $100,000. Canada Geese return home From page 1 them up on training flights behind their ultra-light aircraft. The original flock of 18 geese now consists of 16, following the death of two from injuries over the winter. Although Mr. Lishman has been planning for the return flight from the outset of the pro- ject, he quietly hoped the young geese might return to Purple Hill on their own. Wild flocks of Canada Geese began migrating back to Canada a couple of weeks ago, but Lishman's geese did not take up the urge. | "They appear to be tao com- fortable at Airlie Centre," Mr. Lishman told the Port Perry - Star in an interview last Sunday morning at his home. He said that returning geese have already layed eggs and pointed out a Canada Goose, which has returned to Lishman's property for the past four years, sitting peacefully on -- > p --- 's Sn L f=, . > Pt 4 or 'Fr a b py 0) a - Vv ------ LT x - . dN F Ne EY £1 ~ FA Sa pL, oR ak 3 | zm - 3 < '. 7 its nest amid the freshly fallen Easter morning snow. Mr. Lishman said the incuba- tion period for the eggs is bet- ween 28-31 days so young gos- lings should hatch about the first week of May. Following the return of his now "famous geese," Mr. Lishman plang to raise a new group of young goslings. Theorizing his flock might have been too small a group to migrate on their own, he hopes to integrate the new group with the yearlings and return to Airlie Centre next fall with bet- ween 24-30 geese. ; Mr. Lishman says a deal has been agreed upon between him- self and Columbia Pictures for a full length movie about his life and the migration story. It is the funds agreed upon for this movie that will help finance the heavy costs involved in the project. He estimates last year's pro- ject cost about $130,000, with both Lishman and Duff provid- ing their time free of charge. He says he has been surprised at the amount of press coverage Operation = Migration has received but suggests it's par- tially because it's such a posi- tive story. "Man has always been envi- ous of the ability of birds to fly," he said and it shows. Never a day goes by when he doesn't receive phone calls or letters from all over the country. But his favorite comments come from school age kids who send in letters and entire class pro- jects about his flight with the geese. This Friday, April 8, Bill Lishman and Joe Duff will climb back into their ultra- lights and call out "goose, goose, goose" as they coax their gaggle of 16 Canada Geese into the blue sky for the flight home. Then they'll begin the train- ing and preparations all over again. has a new look - but we still have the same hometown service and quality.
