Royal Winnpeg Ballet School By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star While most young girls her age will be enjoying summer va- cations, one Scugog girl will be concentrating on pirouettes and plies. Katie Van Camp, a 12-year- old pupil at R.H. Cornish Public School, was one of a handful of children to be chosen to attend the prestigious Royal Winnipeg Ballet School this summer. Katie will spend six weeks at the school from July 1 to August 5. And she's looking at the expe- rience as a chance to both fur- ther her talents and also to have some fun. "It'll be a lot of ballet, but it will also be a break," she said. But her mother views the ex- perience as an opportunity for the young ballerina to deter- mine her future. "I think the five weeks will give her an opportunity to deter- mine what she wants to do," said Cindy Van Camp. "She'll know then if she enjoys it." The summer program at the University of Winnipeg intro- duces students to the rigor, dis- cipline and high standards re- quired for the proper development of a professional dancer. Auditions were held throughout Canada and the United States, as well as a number of other countries. While at the school, she will also audition for full-time place- ment at the school, a decision which is being met with mixed feelings from her family. "Tt will take a lot of hard work on her part. But if she makes it, it will be a bridge to cross when we come to it," said Mrs. Van Camp. But Katie, who has been dancing since she was three- years-old, already has her heart set on a profession al career with the troupe in Winnipeg. "I'm pretty sure I want tobe a ballerina," she said. AftetLoss Learning bow to cope with grief l p o Questions & Answers about grief recovery* Q. Recently widowed, I'm noticing that some of my women friends act "funny" when I'm around them and their husbands. How could I be a threat? A. There are women who feel adding a single person to their couples crowd pre- sents a threat. There are many reasons for these feel- ings. Sometimes, it is because they are insecure in their own marriages, but often it's because they see you as a widow now and worry about how they will survive a loss like yours. You represent something theyd rather not think about. Spend more time with those who welcome and support you and make new friends among those who also have been widowed. *Questions from bereavement classes are answered here by the editor of AfterLoss, the month- ly grief-recovery help letter.
