4a - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 29,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Sr ORTS Legionaires are All-Ontario champs On Saturday, the Legionaires and their families boarded the bus for Mooretown, hoping that the long return trip would be filled with excitement of cham- pions, that the 30-year wait would be over. We arrived early and the boys went for a run to get their minds off the excite- ment that was building. During warmups, you could téll that the parents were also feeling this excitement as they cheered every move. The game started with end- to-end play and hard hitting, with good defensive play by both teams. Scott Jeffrey found the net four minutes into the game with a slow-moving shot that surprised everyone. Adam Jones got the assist. The Port players, coaches and parents alike were ecstatic. The play wae? P \ then got a little chippy with both teams drawing several penalties before the end of the period. They were, however, the last penalties in the game as both teams settled down to a se- rious game of hockey. With just 59 seconds left in the first peri- od, Adam Hobbs fed Adam Jones a break-away pass and he had no problem finding the mark. The second period started out very chippy, but there were no penalties called as our boys were intent on keeping their cool and not being goaded into foolish penalties. Five minutes into the period, our hard work was rewarded when Scotty got his second goal with help from the two Adams. A minute later, after Shane Savage had made the initial save, Mooretown got their first goal which was some- what controversial, but count- ed. With a minute left in the pe- riod, Adam J. passed the puck . out front and Derek Tindall . made no mistake ending the pe- riod with the Legionaires ahead 5-1. Mooretown came out flying after the break and by the 35 second mark had narrowed our lead to 5-3. Less than 30 sec- onds later, however, the two Ad- ams did it again, with Jones get- ting the goal and Hobbs the as- sist...we're back in the groove again. This ended the scoring but not the great plays. The for- wards, Ian, Danny, Troy, Adam, Adam, Derek, Jon, Scott and Seth kept coming in on the Mooretown goalie. Spectacular - play after play kept pressure on the opposition and our defence, - Jeff, Wyatt, Glenn and Casey performed admirably. As the game wound down, the excite- ment was building, our parents were really into this game and our boys were playing a very disciplined game; they knew now they could win. When the final buzzer sound- ed, the players and coaches flocked onto the ice; the excite- ment was unbelievable. Our goalies Dann and Shane and the rest of the team had come a long way from September and Garry and Ed now had their champions. The final score - 6-3. Techstar Bantams settle for second The Port Perry Techstar Bantam Bs were defeated this weekend by Port Elgin for the All Ontario Championship, but they didn't give up the title eas- ily. The boys played with enthu- siasm and determination and, on Saturday night, the game went into a 10 minute overtime to leave the game in a tie situa- tion. The team from Port Elgin came on fast and furious in the first period but the goaltending by the Techstar's John Babcock was outstanding and he was able to make many saves before captain Craig Jennings of Port Elgin was able to put one past him. The rest of the first period remained scoreless. In the second period, Port El- gin pushed the lead to 3-0 be- fore Port Perry's Matt Philips got a lone-handed goal to final- ly put us on the scoreboard. In the third period, it looked pretty gruesome for Port Perry as the Port Elgin lead stretched to 4-1, but the boys in red did not give up and Matt Philips scored another unassisted goal after a lot of hard work by line- rin popped another one away for Port Perry with the assist going to Todd Parry. Port Elgin was able to again work their passing play well to get another goal and make the task seem impossible for Port Perry, but Ashley Van Schelven was right there to catch a rebound shot and again the Techstars fought back. With only minutes to play in the game, coach Dave Jamie- son pulled our goalie for the ex- tra attacker and that was all we needed to even the score. With the pressure on, Jamie Stickert scored the tying goal with the assist from Matt Philips, to take us into overtime play. In the ten-minute overtime period, both teams looked pret- Turn to page 5 Juveniles to open All-Ontarioseries The Key-Bar Juveniles be- gin their best of seven All- Ontario final on Wednesday, March 30 at 8 p.m. at Scugog Arena. On Saturday, March 26, the Scugog Overhead Doors Pee- wee B hockey club played host to Mooretown in game four of their best 3-out-of-5 All Ontario Finals. It was "do or die" for our beloved Doorsmen, for there was no tomorrow, as their backs were against the wall. The Doorsmen's dream season was winding down slowly as "Cinde- rella had one more chance to try on the slipper to see if it would fit". Port got into this one in a hurry as both clubs came out flying. Port Perry was ressing early looking for that all impor- tant first goal. At 12:45, Jeff Neal made a good defensive move along with Scott Harper to get the puck out of the Port Perry zone and up to Alex Wordley, to Travis Pickard who had a good scoring opportu- nity on the Mooretown goal- tender. Mooretown came right Peewee Bs settle fo back down the ice and scored at 12:30 to grab the early lead 1-0. At 10:55, Port Perry was in the Mooretown end of the rink and Ryan Moynes cranked a hard slap shot that just missed the top corner. It was end-to-end hockey at its best with both teams having their chances at 9:32. Scottie Harper doesn't change his play for anybody as he kept slam- ming Mooretown forwards knew what they had to do and it wasn't long before Ryan Puck- heavily into the boards to make them keep their heads up and, hopefully, causing them to make a turnover or two. Port was pressing as hard as they could but the puck just wouldn't goin at the 6:00 mark. Jeff Neal and Scott Harper took the play out of the Port Perry zone at 3:39 up to Alex Wordley at the Mooretown blue line, to Ryan McQuade who fed Travis Pick- ard in the slot and Pickard r second best scored to tie the game at 1-1. Port Perry had Mooretown hemmed in their own zone again at 3:03 when Blayne Kin- nunen set up David Gainey in close, but the Mooretown goalie stood his ground. The Port Perry captain David Gainey and Brad Johnston skated miles in the first period trying to make something happen. Turn to page 7
