"A Famlly Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 29,1994 - 23 Regional official retiring At the March 2 meeting of Re- gional Council, Dr. Mofeed Mi- chael, the Region's Commis- sioner of Planning, announced his plans to take a leave of ab- sence prior to retirement. Dr. Michael has had a long and distinguished career with the Region. In announcing his decision to Council, he ex- pressed his deep appreciation for the support and encourage- ment he had received from suc- cessive Councils over his almost quarter century of service with the Region, but expressed his desire to step down from the many demands of the function. Dr. Michael also pointed out that the Region would need to consider his replacement in the near future in any event. Council has accepted Dr. Mi- chael's retirement proposal "with deep regret" and was unanimous in its praise of his achievements on behalf of the Region over these years. Mayor Gerri Lynn O'Connor, Chair of the Planning Committee, de- scribed him as a completely dedicated employee who has made a major contribution to the Region and its citizens, and Regional Chairman Gary Her- rema called Michael a top pro- fessional who will be sorely missed. Dr. Michael was re- quested to stay on as Commis- sioner until a replacement was found, and has agreed to do so. Council has authorized a suc- cessor search to take place. H&R Block Be it a cottage, rental or a piece of land, you would be ad- vised to take advantage of the "election" provision and utilize any capital gains deduction still available to you. If your second property was purchased prior to Feb. 1992 and has increased in value, it is recommended that you obtain a written appraisal as of Feb. 1994. Provided you have not used all of your $100,000 capital gains deduction in the past, and your 'Cumulative Net Invest- ment Loss' account is not great- er than the capital gain on your property, the appraised value can be used to make a special election with your 1994 income tax return and thus save you fu- ture tax dollars. This election is not only re- stricted to Real Property, it also covers stocks and bonds, collect- ibles and any other item that would fall under the category of 'Capital Gains.'
