re -- "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 22,1994 - 17 by Paul Wylie March 18 was the third game of the Parry Sound - Port Perry semi-final series, held in the Sound. The team had travelled together, along with some ap- preciated fan support, to the Sound by bus. The Sound opened the scor- ing for the third straight game, at the end of a powerplay. Rath- er than wait until the third peri- od to answer back, Port struck in the second. Ryan Ridgway was sitting high in the slot. He received a solid pass from Van- derligt, compliments of some hard forechecking from Wylie. Ridgway calmly stroked it past the goalie, who was caught off guard. The first couple of periods were full of hitting, on behalf of both teams, but after a while Parry Sound began to shy away from the anticipated checks. With this in mind, Port entered the third realizing that it was in their power to pull out a victory. " Sure enough, Kearns and Gar- vock made some unselfish, heads-up passes to hit Desau- tels who redirected the cross-ice pass behind the goal, to give Key-Bar the lead. Shortly after, Johnny had come out to play. At the drop of the puck, Ennis pushed the Juveniles advance | to all-Ontario finals puck forward, walked around the opposing centre, and rifled one under the crossbar before the goalie had a chance to react. John's marker turned out to be the game winner, to give the Port Perry Juveniles a ticket to the All-Ontario Champion- ships! Before the end of the game, the Sound scored once more with about five minutes left, but their hopes were squandered af- ter their star player took a fool- ish roughing penalty with only two minutes left. Sean Ellis net- ted Port's fourth goal into an open net, with only two seconds left on the clock. It should also be mentioned that Port's de- fence and especially Matt Wil- letts, between the pipes for Port, had a rock solid perfor- mance all series. The Key-Bar Juvies now wait for the outcome of the other semi-finals, and it looks as though they will be facing off against Shallow Lake, some- time this weekend. Hope to see your support, by cheering on the Juvies. For the record, this team has not won the champi- onships in over 30 years. There could be quite a celebration if fate unfolds in our favor. Good luck boys! Legionnaires lead series by six points On March 19, Mooretown came to Port Perry for game three of the All-Ontario Finals against the Legionaires. The game was played in front of the largest crowd the Legionaires have played for in a long time. The fans were treated to quite a game. Just nine seconds into. the first period, the Mooretown squad startled Port's players and fans alike by scoring a goal. Port appeared scrambly for a while but as the minutes passed, they gained their com- posure. Shane Savage made several good saves and the peri- od ended without further scor- ing. Fhe Legionaires play contin- ued to improve as the second pe- riod ticked away and scored a goal from a high stick, which was disallowed, but showed the puck would go into the Moore- town net. Port continued to in- crease the pressure on the Mooretown goalie and, finally with 3:42 left in the second, Adam Jones deflected one in on a pass from Derek Tindall, from behind the net. Scott Jeffrey also assisted. The game was not tied. With 12:08 left in the third period, Danny Lyons scored a goal from Adam Jones and Jon Froats and Port had the lead for the first time in the game. Late in the period, Mooretown pulled their goalie and after several missed long shots cum icing calls, Port settled for the 2-1 win for a 5-1 point lead in the series. On March 20, Port again hosted Mooretown for game four and again the visitors drew first blood just 1:30 into the game. This game, however, did not take as long to become a fast, hard-hitting end-to-end game as the previous day, and the fans were soon on the edge of their seats as Shane and Mooretown goalie made save af- ter save, some of which ap- peared impossible. Port was re- warded halfway through the period with a goal by Scott, as- ciated by the two Adams. Nice work, guys! Midway through the second, Port was having trouble clear- ing the puck and Mooretown, on a shot from the top of the cir- cle, hit the post. Port took the lead with 5:44 left in the second on a slow slider by Jeff Ashton from the point, assisted by Seth Gray. There was so much traffic in front of the net, the goalie never saw it coming. Late in the period, Adam Jones tried un- successfully to beat the net- minder, who was still robbing Port at every turn. Late in the third, however, Mooretown's goalie ran out of luck, and the Legionaires' per- sistence paid off with three quick goals. Derek tipped a shot from Jon for goal three, Adam H. tipped one by Casey Van Schagen from Danny, and Adam J. scored from Jon and Scott. The game ended with Port ahead 5-1, thanks to hard work by all the boys and great support by the fans. We would also like to thank Ron King for his great announcing. Port now leads the series seven points to one and will be travelling to Mooretown on Saturday for game five at 6 p.m. J. PETER HVIDSTEN / PORT PERRY STAR Port Perry Swamp Auto Body Bantams were runner-up in the championship game against Newmarket last Friday night. Newmarket scored at 2:51 of the overtime to win the Championship by a score of 3-2. Pictured above are the Port Perry Bantams following the game. Swamp edged in championship The Port Perry Swamp Auto Body hockey team of the local Bantam House League played in their annual house league tournament held in Port Perry on March 18 and were quite suc- cessful as they marched all the way to the A Championship game where they were narrow- ly defeated in overtime by a strong Newmarket team. The Swampers' first game was against Emmerson; also of Port Perry, and the early morn- ing hour had the Swampers struggling to get things going. Emmerson got on the board first as Jeff Whitfield was left alone out front to fire it home with Brennan Malcolm assist- ing. Then it was Emmerson once again as Mike Lott scored unassisted to give his team a 2- 0 lead. As the first period wound down and the Swam- pers' blood started to warm up, they started to get things going as Jeremy Gibson got his team started with Kris Wootton pick- ing up the assist. The second period was full of fast action and lots of good scor- ing chances by both teams but their respective goalies, Doug Short of the Swampers and Em- merson's Luke Carnaghan, were both having strong games in the nets. Finally, it was the Swampers who fired one in to tie the game up at two apiece. Scoring for the Swampers was Jeremy Gibson with his second, from Kevin Edwards. The third period had the Swampers jump out front by a 3-2 count as Brennan Arsenault scored shorthanded on a hard wrist shot just inside the far post. Assisting on the play were Aaron Levy and Cory Wytra- zyk. With time running down and Emmerson's goalie on the bench in favor of the extra at- tacker to try and tie the game up, it was Aaron Levy flipping the puck high over everyone and Kris Wootton turned on the jets, getting to the puck first and slipping it into the empty net to wind up the scoring and give the Swampers a 4-2 win. The Swamper's next oppo- nent was Milton and this was one of the best games of the day and possibly the year, as these two teams were very evenly oi nS matched and both wanted the win. The only goal of the game came in the second period as Jeremy Gibson made a beauti- ful little pass from the side of the net out front to Kris Woot- ton and he found the open cor- ner to give his Swampers the 1- 0 lead. This game was a team effort all the way as everyone played well for the entire game. Picking up the shutout was Swamper netminder Doug Short. The A Championship game pitted the Swampers up against Newmarket and the crowd was once again in for a very entertaining game as both of these teams came to play. Newmarket opened the scoring first at the midway point of the first period but the Swampers never quit working hard and it paid off as Brennan Arsenault got the equalizer with help from Jeremy Gibson and Aaron Levy. : The fast action continued and it was the Swampers who grabbed the lead in the second Turnto Page 19 SCOTT ANDERSON / PORT PERRY STAR Port Perry Re Max Novice house league team went down to defeat 5-1 in the championship game versus a team from Newcastle at Scugog Arena on March 17.
