Port Perry Star OFFICE CENTRE 188 Mary St, Port Perry 985-7383 CCE by Paul Wylie Just before the ModJacks played their second last game of the season, the Port Perry Juve- niles started the semi-finals against a strong anticipated squad from Parry Sound. Those ModJack fans who showed up early to get a good seat for the Junior C game were treated to some fantastic hockey. Perhaps it was the large crowd, but the Key-Bar Juvies put on quite a comeback. After Parry Sound scored the first goal, while on the power play, Port responded minutes later, on their own power play. Vanderligt fed the point, and Heasman sent a bul- let on net, which MacArthur de- flected into the open net. Unfor- tunately, Port fell behind 3-1 when our defence broke down and Parry Sound scored two more goals. Slightly . discouraged, Port took a foolish penalty with just over two minutes remaining in the game. Things didn't look good, but Port didn't give up. Even though they were a man down, the determined squad forechecked with plenty of de- termination. Port pulled Wil- letts to make it five skaters apiece. In front of the net, Gar- vock muscled the puck over to Ennis who slapped the bounc- ing puck past the Parry Sound goaltender, to keep Port's hopes alive. Only 1:09 remained on the clock. Port was still short- handed. Heasman stepped onto the ice to play the point, as Port gained the opposition's end once again. While Parry Sound broke down as they could feel Port pick up the momentum, Van- derligt once again set up Heas- man who was open just inside the blue line. He kept his head down, and sent another bullet inches off the ice. MacArthur was sitting in the right spot again, to redirect the puck past the helpless goalie. Port had tied the game up with only 36 seconds left. The game went into overtime. Port had the desire and the mo- mentum. With Parry Sound sit- ting on their heels, the Juvies popped a quick one. Ridgway got the assist on McEnaney's game winner. The rest of the 10 minute regulation overtime saw Port play a strong defen- sive game to protect the lead. The game ended in Port's favor, 4-3, as the Key-Bar Juvies took the first game of the best three out of five series. The next night, Port trav- elled to Parry Sound. In front of an impressive home crowd, Par- ry Sound again jumped out to a one-goal lead in the first period. Both teams played equally strong, both forechecking and hitting throughout the rest of the first and the entire second period. At the buzzer, Port got away with some dirty stick work. The Juvies entered the third one goal down, but even- handed. Not much happened until about halfway eoah the third. Port turned over the puck, and the Parry Sound skater walked in on a breaka- way. Willetts, however, was up to the test and stoned him cold. It was probably the turning point of the game. Seconds lat- er, Heasman started the juy- gernaught team from Port roll- ing, when he teed up at the point and sent his trademark slapshot on the net. Vanderligt picked up the 10 foot rebound and coolly put it in the top cor- ner. The game was tied. With determination and heart, Port continued to play with surpris- ing intensity. Even while penal- ty-killing, Heasman, Card and McEnaney turned up ice and faced three of their defenders. While Scott took out two of them, Card trailed in and grabbed the rebound. McEna- ney put the second rebound up- stairs, to put Port in the lead. After Fitzy kept the puck in their zone, he wound up and beat the unsuspecting goal- tender on the low blocker side. Vanderligt and McEnaney "picked up the assists. Port ran the clock out, and won the game Juveniles take 2-0 series lead over Parry Sound 3-1. Special mention goes to the strong performances from Kearns, Heasman and also El- lis, who managed to frustrate Parry Sound into at least five penalties. Attention: All MoJack Fans! Continue to show your support for hockey, even though the Mo- Jacks have ended their season. On Friday, March 18, there will e a bus (coach) leaving from the Port Perry Arena for the third, and possibly the last game of the series, 9 p.m. start. If inter- ested in joining the team and the other hockey fans, call Dave at 985-3483 for more informa- tion. Your support and encour- agement for minor hockey would be appreciated. It's bound to be an exciting game, as Parry Sound has their backs up against the wall.
