"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" / Clayton Alexander Love passed away on Saturday, Jan. 15, 1994, at his home in Port Perry in the presence of his fam- ily, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Daughter of the late Daniel and Ida Lee, Mabel was born on a farm at Washburn Island June 14, 1909. The family moved to East Poplar, Sas- katchewan to homestead. In 1917, Mabel was to return with her very ill mother to Wash- burn Island. Mabel was left motherless that year at the age of eight and was raised by her wonderful aunt Mariah. Mabel attended Oakwood School and Brown's School and after gradu- ation, she became a domestic in Lindsay. She faithfully kept up her correspondence with her brothers and other members of her family. In 1932, she met and married Wilfred Sturman, a Bernardo boy. They had seven children. It was Mabel's faithful corre- sponding that kept the lines of communication open to the rela- tives in England. There were many ups and downs in Mabel's life, especially the dreadful fire that destroyed the family's new home in Whit- by. Butin 1946, Mabel and Wilf, along with their children, moved to Seagrave. This was not to be just another house to Mabel, it was to be home. This is where she raised her chil- dren, looked after her animals and attended her lovely gar- dens. It was some 20 years later that Mabel and husband Wilf took their dream trip to Eng- land and she got to meet all of her living in-laws for the first time. In April 1991, Mabel took ill. She spent one year at the Port Perry Community Hospital and two years at the Port Perry Community Nursing Home. Left to mourn her loss are her loving children, Ken and wife Eleanor of Seagrave, Isabel and husband Allan Sweetman of Bowmanville, Lee and wife Car- ol of Seagrave, Les of Seagrave, Reg and wife Carolyn of Bow- manville, Jean Cox of Bowman- ville, and predeceased by infant son William. Sadly missed by 15 grand- children and 12 great grand- children. Predeceased by her loving husband Wilfred in 1982 and brothers Albert of Whitby, Les of Calgary and Howard of Longview, Washington. He was born March 12, 1916 on a farm on Concession 12 in the Township of Reach, north of Greenbank. Clayton was the youngest child of Mary and Charles Love. The older chil- dren were Dr. Bretton Love, Lloyd, Oswald, George, CIif- ford, Lambert (Bert), Telford and Elva (Taylor) - his surviv- ing sister. Clayton received his educa- tion at the Continuation School in Greenbank, which took in two years of a High School pro- gram. He was in his teenage years during the Depression and left for the west to find har- vest work on farms. He always said "he doubled his money - left home with two dollars and came back with four". He returned to Port Perry to live with his brother Clifford and worked in General Motors for a time. On Feb. 7, 1942, he married Helen Patrician Jack- son, the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Jackson. They had three children, George Edwin (Teddy), Alexan- dra Patricia and John Came- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 15,1994 - 25 ron. George Edwin predeceased his fatherin 1951. In the late 1940s, Clayton joined with Clifford to form a trucking and droving business. In 1952 he bought a farm and started a Purebred Holstein dairy herd and continued in this operation, as well as droving, until the farm was sold in 1969. Clayton had a wide acquain- tance in the Purebred Holstein business and was a good judge of the Breed. He enjoyed people and was known for his good hu- mor and as a helpful friend and neighbor. Clayton was a member of the United Church of Canada, in Prince Albert, where he served as an Elder and Treasurer, and was a member of Warriner I.O.O.F. Lodge. In the 1960s he served on the Central Ontario District High School Board. One of his great loves in life was violin music, which he learned from his father, who 'was an accomplished violinist. He was also very proud of his Scottish ancestry through his mother. Friends paid their respects at the Wagg Funeral Home on Tuesday, Jan. 18 and Clayton's funeral was held in the Prince Albert United Church on Wednesday, Jan. 19, with Rev. Robert Le Page officiating, with tributes of a poem read by his granddaughter April Love and a eulogy by his great niece So- phia Brendon. Pall bearers were grandson Clayton John Love, nieces George Brock and Barbara Fes- teryga, and great nephews Blair, Blake and Blane Paton.
